  1. 6. Atypical femoral fractures: Another brick in the wall : On aspects of healing, treatment strategies and surveillance

    Author : Hans Peter Bögl; Jörg Schilcher; Anna Fahlgren; Gösta Ullmark; Per Aspenberg; Björn Rosengren; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Atypical femoral fractures are stress fractures of the femoral subtrochanteric and diaphyseal region. It is a common notion that these fractures heal poorly, if at all. In this thesis we show that patients with atypical femoral fractures have a good capacity to generate bone and therefore heal fractures. READ MORE

  2. 7. Response to mechanical loading in healing tendons

    Author : Pernilla Eliasson; Per Aspenberg; Anna Fahlgren; Michael Kjaer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Ruptured tendons heal faster if they are exposed to mechanical loading. Loading creates deformation of the extracellular matrix and cells, which give rise to intracellular signalling, increased gene expression and protein synthesis. The effects of loading have been extensively studied in vitro, and in intact tendons in vivo. READ MORE

  3. 8. Host responses to malaria and bacterial co-infections

    Author : Maria Nelson; Johan Normark; Sven Bergström; Anna Fahlgren; Olle Stendahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Plasmodium; Malaria; Borrelia; S. pneumoniae; Co-infection; Immunology; Metabolomics;

    Abstract : The two main causes of child mortality and morbidity in Africa are malaria and invasive bacterial diseases. In addition, co-infections in sub-Saharan Africa are the rule rather than the exception. However, not much is known about the host-pathogen interaction during a concomitant infection or how it affects the outcome of disease. READ MORE

  4. 9. Host-pathogen interactions during Campylobacter and Yersinia infections

    Author : Nayyer Taheri; Anna Fahlgren; Maria Fällman; Sun Nyunt Wai; Elena Vikström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Campylobacter jejuni; Yersinia pseudotuberculosis; OMV; bile; temperature; proteomic;

    Abstract : The innate immune system is known for protecting the host against invading pathogens, for instance enteropathogens infecting the gastrointestinal tract. The production of e.g. antimicrobial peptides, cytokines, and chemokines by innate immune cells and intestinal epithelial cells contribute to bacterial clearance. READ MORE

  5. 10. Inflammation in Cancellous and Cortical Bone Healing

    Author : Love Tätting; Per Aspenberg; Anna Fahlgren; Jan Ernerudh; Jörg Cammenga; Louis C. Gerstenfeld; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Fractures in humans most commonly occur near the joints, in the metaphyseal bone area mainly consisting of cancellous bone. Despite this, mainly cortical fractures, located in the diaphyseal bone area, have been studied in experimental models of bone healing. READ MORE
