  1. 1. Population Differentiation in Solidago virgaurea along Altitudinal Gradients

    Author : Anna Bergsten; Jon Ågren; Staffan Karlsson; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population differentiation; altitudinal gradient; plant nutrient status; resorption efficiency; resorption proficiency; flowering phenology; countergradient variation; reproductive effort; flower production; cost of reproduction; Biology; Biologi; Other biology; Övrig biologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Altitudinal gradients offer attractive opportunities for studies of population differentiation in response to environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis, I examined population differentiation along altitudinal gradients by combining common-garden experiments with field studies and experiments in alpine, subalpine and boreal populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea. 2. 2. Chicken domestication : Effects of tameness on brain gene expression and DNA methylation

    Author : Johan Bélteky; Per Jensen; Anna Kukekova; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Domestication greatly increases phenotypic variation in a short time span, with selection for a single phenotype and a plethora of associated phenotypic changes as an outcome of the process. The domestication process influences the underlying genomic architecture of a species, and the success and speed of the process is likely influenced by it. READ MORE

  3. 3. Modelling Evolution : From non-life, to life, to a variety of life

    Author : Yu Liu; David J. T. Sumpter; Peter Dittrich; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical biology; Biocomplexity; Artificial chemistry; Ecosystem evolution; Origin of life; Self-replication; Prebiotic evolution; Collectively-catalytic; Golden ratio; Tillämpad matematik och statistik; Applied Mathematics and Statistics;

    Abstract : Life is able to replicate itself, e.g., a microorganism is able to divide into two identical ones, and a single plant is able to forest a whole island. READ MORE

  4. 4. Reproductive physiology of the female three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus

    Author : Chrysoula Roufidou; Bertil Borg; Geir Lasse Taranger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; overripening of eggs; spawning cycle; brain-pituitary-gonad BPG axis; vitellogenin; ovarian fluid; sex steroids; reproduction; three-spined stickleback; Gasterosteus aculeatus; fish; funktionell zoomorfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Abstract : Reproduction in vertebrates, including fishes, is under control of the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis. The female three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, produces egg clutches at intervals of a few days and spawns them in a nest built by male. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microbiological surveillance of biogas plants : focusing on the acetogenic community

    Author : Abhijeet Singh; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Biogas process has great potential for reducing the current dependence on fossil fuels and for climate mitigation and sustainable development. In this process organic matter is decomposed under anerobic conditions by microorganisms to form biogas and a nutrient rich biofertiliser. READ MORE
