  1. 16. A study of ethylene production via the 2-oxoglutarate dependent pathway in S. cerevisiae

    Author : Nina Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ethylene forming enzyme; Ethylene; respiration rate; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; cultivation; production; nitrogen metabolism; 2-oxoglutarate; enzyme engineering; metabolic modeling;

    Abstract : The detrimental effect of the petroleum industry on the environment combined with the threat of peak oil has driven the exploration for alternative strategies to produce traditional petrochemicals. Biotechnological production could be an alternative, using microorganisms to convert renewable feedstocks into desired products. READ MORE

    Abstract : The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a widely used cell factory for the production of fuels, chemicals, and it also provides a platform for the production of many heterologous proteins of medical or industrial interest. In this thesis, random and rational approaches, such as vector design, host engineering, fermentation analysis, UV Mutation, coupled with high-throughput systems biology techniques (including whole genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and flux analysis) and integrated analysis (Reporter feature technique), were employed to engineer cellular properties more effectively and purposefully to construct cell factories for protein production. Abstract : Bioprocesses enable the efficient production of valuable chemicals by microorganisms such as the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae . Predictable and stochastic perturbations affect microbial performance in an industrial-scale bioreactor. READ MORE

  4. 19. Bioaugmentation for reduction of diffuse pesticide contamination : a bioprophylactic concept

    Author : Karin Önneby; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []

    Abstract : Pesticides and their residues frequently contaminate surface waters and groundwater so consequently there is a great need to identify methods and practices that reduce such contamination. This thesis examined the potential of a 'bioprophylactic' concept based on the hypothesis that diffuse contamination after application in the field can be significantly reduced if pesticides are degraded as rapidly as possible after the intended effect has been achieved.
