  1. 36. Prevention of Biofilm Formation on Silicone Rubber Materials for Outdoor High Voltage Insulators

    Author : Sevil Atari Jabarzadeh; Sigbritt Karlsson; Ferruccio Doghieri; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High voltage insulator; silicone rubber; biofouling; biofilm; biocide; superhydrophobicity; self-cleaning; hierarchical roughness;

    Abstract : Microbial colonization on the surface of silicone rubber high voltage outdoor insulators often results in the formation of highly hydrated biofilm that influence the surface properties, such as surface hydrophobicity. The loss of hydrophobicity might lead to dry band formation, and, in the worst cases, flashover and failure of the insulator. READ MORE

  2. 37. Impact of Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus on the intestinal microflora and bioavailability of some food mutagens

    Author : Kerstin Orrhage; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal microflora is a complex ecological system, normally characterised by a flexible equilibrium. The most important role of the microflora, from the point of view of the host, is probably to act in colonisation resistance against exogenous, potentially pathogenic, microorganisms. READ MORE

  3. 38. Colonization, infection and dissemination in intensive care patients

    Author : Christina Agvald-Öhman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Colonization; multi-resistant bacteria; dissemination; intensive care unit; invasive Candida infection;

    Abstract : Nosocomial infections are a substantial problem in hospitals all over the world and the incidence is among the highest in the intensive care unit, affecting mortality and morbidity for the individual patient and cost for the society. In order to prevent these infections it is important to gain knowledge about colonization and infection pathways as well as about bacterial dissemination between patients. READ MORE

  4. 39. Molecular Epidemiology and Mechanisms of Antibiotic Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Qatar

    Author : Mazen Sid Ahmed; Jana Jass; Emad Ibrahim; Ali Sultan; Bo Söderquist; Christian Giske; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibiotics; C T; CZA; MDR; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; ST235; VEB; VIM;

    Abstract : Inappropriate and excessive use of antibiotics promotes antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in Gram-negative bacteria (GNB). There is a noticeable increase in nosocomial infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and an increase in cost management. 5. 40. Beta-lactam and metronidazole resistance in the Bacteroides fragilis group

    Author : Hong Fang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bacteroides fragilis group; beta-lactam; metronidazole; resistance; beta-lactamase; penicillinbinding proteins PBPs ; outer membrane proteins OMPs ;

    Abstract : The Bacteroides fragilis group organisms are anaerobic gram-negative bacilli. Ten species are currently included in this group. Members of the B. fragilis group are the major constituents of the normal colonic microflora and the most commonly encountered anaerobic bacteria in clinical specimens. READ MORE
