  1. 1. Methods for Asymmetric Olefination Reactions; Development and Application to Natural Product Synthesis

    Author : Daniel Strand; Tobias Rein; Viresh Rawal; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antitumor agents; Asymmetric Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons; Desymmetrization; Metal-catalyzed olefination; Mucocin; Palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution; Parallel kinetic resolution; Pyranicin; Pyragonicin; Rhenium; Stereoconvergent synthesis; Stereodivergent synthesis; Stereoselective synthesis; Tetrahydropyran; Wittig reaction; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the development and application of methods for asymmetric olefinations, in particular Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reactions, in the synthesis of certain natural products. Relying on asymmetric HWE reactions to access key building blocks, two natu-ral products, pyranicin and pyragonicin, were synthesized from common late intermediates. READ MORE

  2. 2. In vitro studies on the potential immunosuppressive and antitumor effects of antidepressants : induction of apoptosis in human T-cells and a myeloid leukemia cell line

    Author : Zhenlei Xia; Tom Cotter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Antidepressants are widely used in treating depressive disorders. It has been demonstrated that several components of the immune system may be activated in the acute clinical stage of major depression and that such activation may play a role in the onset of depressive symptoms. 3. 3. Effect of IL-1beta secretion on lymphoid tissue and on antitumor immune responses

    Author : Olle Björkdahl; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; serologi; Immunologi; transplantation; Immunology; serology;

    Abstract : Interleukin (IL)-1beta is one of the most pleiotropic and potent cytokines, produced predominantly by activated monocytes and macrophages. IL-1 plays an important role in normal immunoregulatory processes but also in pathophysiological inflammatory responses. In the present study, we developed a model for active IL-1beta secretion. 4. 4. On the pro-apoptotic mechanisms of the antitumor drugs doxorubicin and interferon-alpha

    Author : Theocharis Panaretakis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Anti-cancer drugs act primarily by inducing apoptosis. However, knowledge of how various substances induce apoptosis is still incomplete, and so is the basis for the great variation in cellular sensitivity to cytotoxic drugs. READ MORE

  5. 5. Antitumor effect in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with solid cancer

    Author : Réka Conrad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been presented as a promising immunotherapy not only against hematological malignancies but also against solid tumors. Different solid tumors such as renal cell, breast, colon, prostate and advanced primary liver cancer have been treated with HSCT at our center. READ MORE
