  1. 1. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder

    Author : Majd A. I. Mirza; Tobias Larsson; Tilman Drüeke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FGF23; FGF-23; CKD; CKD-MBD; cardiovascular disease; vascular function; atherosclerosis; hypertrophy; LVMI; LVH; fractures; bone; fat mass; obesity; apolipoproteins; cholesterol; lipids; Kidney diseases; Njursjukdomar; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 2. 2. Metabolic risk markers and relative survival in patients with aortic stenosis requiring surgery

    Author : Anders Holmgren; Ulf Näslund; Stefan Söderberg; Michael Henein; Rune Haaverstad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; aortic stenosis; aortic valve surgery; coronary artery disease; prospective cohort study; risk markers; lipoprotein a ; apolipoproteins; proteomics; troponin T; C-reactive protein; relative survival; observed survival; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valve disorder requiring surgery in developed countries. The etiology of AS is only partly known.  Identification of new biomarkers in prospective studies could lead to novel insights in the etiology of AS, and possibly lead to improved clinical management. 3. 3. Regulation of Lipoprotein Lipase Activity : an In-vitro Study of a Complex and Dynamic System

    Author : Oleg Kovrov; Gunilla Olivecrona; Aivar Lookene; Mikael Larsson; Geesje Dallinga-Thie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Triglyceride Metabolism; Lipoprotein lipase; Angiopoietin-Like Proteins; Apolipoproteins; Isothermal titration calorimetry; Biochemistry; biokemi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The progress of human society outpaces our biological evolution, and this brings unexpected health problems. The industrial revolution brought up dramatic changes in nutrition and lifestyle – we are increasingly shifting towards a nutrient-rich Western-patterned diet and to a sedentary lifestyle. READ MORE

  4. 4. The Resting Electrocardiogram and Risk for Cardiovascular Disease : A Population-Based Study in Middle-Aged Men with up to 32 Years of Follow-Up

    Author : Christina Ström Möller; Lars Lind; Björn Zethelius; Johan Sundström; Annika Rosengren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; electrocardiogram; risk factors; epidemiology; population-based studies; cardiovascular mortality; apolipoproteins; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD;

    Abstract : The aim was to contribute to the optimal use of the resting ECG by exploring, in middle-aged and elderly men, the development and regression of ECG abnormalities; the prognostic value of the ECG for cardiovascular disease compared to conventional risk factors; and the impact of age at baseline and follow-up time for prediction of cardiovascular disease.It was based on the Uppsala Study of Adult Men cohort that was started in 1970. 5. 5. Atherosclerosis in middle-aged men. A prospective study with focus on factors related to the metabolic syndrome

    Author : Karin Wallenfeldt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : apolipoproteins; atherosclerosis; C-reactive protein; insulin resistance; intima-media thickness; LDL cholesterol; longitudinal study; metabolic syndrome X; smokeless tobacco; ultrasonography;

    Abstract : The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of cardiovascular disease CVD) risk factors. Pro-spective studies have demonstrated that patients with MetS are about three times more likely to experience CVD events than those without MetS. Up to one third of the adult population seems to be affected worldwide. READ MORE
