  1. 6. Chromatin Insulators and CTCF: Architects of Epigenetic States during Development

    Author : Rituparna Mukhopadhyay; Rolf Ohlsson; Karim Malik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; DNA methylation; CTCF; Chromatin insulators; Microarray; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi;

    Abstract : A controlled and efficient coordination of gene expression is the key for normal development of an organism. In mammals, a subset of autosomal genes is expressed monoallelically depending on the sex of the transmitting parent, a phenomenon known as genomic imprinting. READ MORE

  2. 7. High-Performance Building Design and Decision-Making Support for Architects in the Early Design Phases

    Author : Juan Ren; Ivo Martinac; Yu Liu; Angela Sasic Kalagasidis; KTH; []
    Keywords : High-performance building HPB ; sustainable performance; design decision making; building environmental assessment BEA tools; architects; design decision elements; sources of inspiration;

    Abstract : Based on the design decision making process from an architect’s point of view, a related literature review, theoretical analyses, and inductive inferences, this thesis proposes a new interpretation of high-performance building (HPB), translates/maps criteria issues related to building environmental assessment (BEA) tools for key design decision making elements, and identifies sources of inspiration for HPB designs. This thesis intends to propose an integrated conceptual model for the design of HPBs to provide direct knowledge-based decision making support to architects in the early design phase. READ MORE

  3. 8. Healing Architecture: Evidence, Intuition, Dialogue

    Author : Stefan Lundin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; EBD; intuition; critical approach; best practice; design dialogue; tacit knowledge; healing architecture; Design research in architecture; evidence-based design;

    Abstract : In today’s healthcare architecture there is a striving to make better use of evidence to achieve environments that can contribute to patients’ healing, recovery, and well-being. These ideas are in part a legacy of the theory and practice of evidence-based medicine and the success it has enjoyed in its field. READ MORE

  4. 9. Perceptions of intensive forestry and multi-storey wood frames among Swedish actors

    Author : Kerstin Hemström; Krushna Mahapatra; Ole Jess Olsen; Anders Lunnan; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; multi-storey wood frames; intensive forestry; actor perceptions; legitimacy; path dependence; Byggteknik; Civil engineering;

    Abstract : Implementation of intensive forestry (fertilization, cultivation of non-native tree species, and clone cultivation) on part of the forested land area in Sweden and an increased construction of wood-framed multi-storey buildings can contribute to reduce the net carbon dioxide emissions of the built environment. This thesis evaluates the acceptance of and interest in intensive forestry and multi-storey wood frames among different actors, and some of the underlying reasons for their approach. READ MORE

  5. 10. Product model based design of precast facades

    Author : Vesa Karhu; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In Finland, approximately 80 % of the facades of buildingsare manufactured as precast units. Currently one of theobstacles to making the overall design and construction ofprecast building facades more efficient is the inefficientexchange of data about facades between architects, structuralengineers and precast element manufacturers.
