  1. 1. Common spaces in assisted living for older persons. Aspects of usability from the residential and workplace perspectives

    Author : Morgan Andersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; user involvement; buildings in use; mixed methods; residential and workplace perspectives; usability; social interaction;

    Abstract : This thesis is about space. It assumes that space forms a necessary part of the structure of existence. The architectural space becomes an existential space in the encounter with the user. Common unit spaces in assisted living (AL) for older persons are the principal venue for social interaction and have no parallel in ordinary housing. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Structure of Chinese Timber Architecture Twelfth century design standards and construction principles

    Author : Qinghua Guo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; units of measurement; design standards; timber structure; Chinese architecture; building patterns; carpentry system; construction principles; proportion; modular design;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the building standards and construction principles prescribed and used in the construction of state buildings of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), China, from the viewpoint of architectural design. It aims to answer three fundamental questions: (1) What measuring system was used in the carpentry design and construction? (2) What building scales and proportions were prescribed for and used in state buildings of the time? (3) What were the interrelations of the structural patterns and roof types, and what were their relationships to the building scales and proportions? The thesis begins by providing detailed explanations of the highly refined and unique Song period modular system which governed not only the sizes of each individual elements, but also the dimensions of structural grids and the proportion of entire building. 3. 3. Improvements in addressing climate factors in urban planning and design

    Author : Saeed Ebrahimabadi; Petter Naess; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Architecture; Arkitektur;

    Abstract : Urban settlements located in subarctic regions have particular characteristics due to their climate. Climate and weather conditions influence people’s attendance in public spaces, their travel habits and recreational activities. In the subarctic regions, this influence is more visible due to greater seasonal differences. READ MORE

  4. 4. Planning for Solar Buildings in Urban Environments

    Author : Jouri Kanters; Avdelningen för Energi och byggnadsdesign; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; architecture; design tool; design process; solar energy; urban planning; photovoltaics; solar thermal; building integration; density; net zero energy buildings; interviews; parametric studies; action research;

    Abstract : Energy use in buildings accounts for a significant proportion of the total energy use in many countries. While past and current buildings have solely been energy consumers, future buildings will, besides using less energy, also need to produce (part of ) the required energy on site with renewables. 5. 5. Effect of IL-1beta secretion on lymphoid tissue and on antitumor immune responses

    Author : Olle Björkdahl; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; serologi; Immunologi; transplantation; Immunology; serology;

    Abstract : Interleukin (IL)-1beta is one of the most pleiotropic and potent cytokines, produced predominantly by activated monocytes and macrophages. IL-1 plays an important role in normal immunoregulatory processes but also in pathophysiological inflammatory responses. In the present study, we developed a model for active IL-1beta secretion.
