  1. 1. The high Arctic summer aerosol : Size, chemical composition, morphology and evolution over the pack-ice

    Author : Evelyne Hamacher-Barth; Caroline Leck; Stephan Weinbruch; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; aerosol; marine gel; electron microscopy; EDX-spectroscopy; chemical composition; morphology; size distribution; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Aerosol particles, especially in the high Arctic are still not very well represented in climate models. Particle size and number concentrations are strongly under-predicted and temporal variations of aerosol composition and size are still not very well understood, mainly due to the sparsity of observations. 2. 2. Quantification of sources and removal mechanisms of atmospheric aerosol particles

    Author : Henrik Grythe; Johan Ström; Dominick Spracklen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerosol; aerosol removal; aerosol emission; aerosol sources; FLEXPART; Arctic aerosol; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The focus of this work has been to quantify important processes for climatically relevant aerosols, and to improve our understanding of, and ability to accurately model, aerosols in the atmosphere on a large scale. This thesis contains five papers focused on different parts of the life cycle of atmospheric aerosol particles. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Arctic Atmosphere : Interactions between clouds, boundary-layer turbulence and large-scale circulation

    Author : Georgia Sotiropoulou; Michael Tjernström; Joseph Sedlar; Susanne Crewell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; mixed-phase clouds; thermodynamic structure; Arctic inversion; cloud-surface interactions; seasonal transition; IFS model; LES; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Arctic climate is changing fast, but weather forecast and climate models have serious deficiencies in representing the Arctic atmosphere, because of the special conditions that occur in this region. The cold ice surface and the advection of warm air aloft from the south result in a semi-continuous presence of a temperature inversion, known as the “Arctic inversion”, which is governed by interacting large-scale and local processes, such as surface fluxes and cloud formation. 4. 4. Investigating aerosol effects on stratocumulus clouds through large-eddy simulation

    Author : Ines Bulatovic; Annica Ekman; Caroline Leck; Ilona Riipinen; Daniel Grosvenor; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerosol particles; stratocumulus; mixed-phase clouds; cloud microphysics; cloud radiative effects; Arctic; Arctic amplification; LES; aerosolpartiklar; stratusmoln; underkylda vattendroppar och iskristaller; molnmikrofysik; molnstrålningseffekter; Arktis; ”large-eddy simulation”; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : Clouds have a large impact on Earth’s radiative budget by reflecting, absorbing and re-emitting radiation. They thus play a critical role in the climate system. Nevertheless, cloud radiative effects in a changing climate are highly uncertain. READ MORE
