1. Automorphic string amplitudes
Abstract : This thesis explores the non-perturbative properties of higher derivative interactions appearing in the low-energy expansion of four-graviton scattering amplitudes in toroidal compactifications of type IIB string theory. We summarise the arguments for finding such higher derivative corrections in terms of automorphic forms using U-duality, supersymmetry and string perturbation theory. READ MORE

2. Homogenization of reaction-diffusion problems with nonlinear drift in thin structures
Abstract : We study the question of periodic homogenization of a variably scaled reaction-diffusion equation with non-linear drift of polynomial type. The non-linear drift was derived as hydrodynamic limit of a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) for a population of interacting particles crossing a domain with obstacle. READ MORE

3. Mathematical analysis and approximation of a multiscale elliptic-parabolic system
Abstract : We study a two-scale coupled system consisting of a macroscopic elliptic equation and a microscopic parabolic equation. This system models the interplay between a gas and liquid close to equilibrium within a porous medium with distributed microstructures. We use formal homogenization arguments to derive the target system. READ MORE

4. Exploring Probabilistic Reasoning : A Study of How Students Contextualise Compound Chance Encounters in Explorative Settings
Abstract : This thesis aims at exploring how probabilistic reasoning arises in explorative learning situations that are random in nature. The focus is especially on what learners with scant experience of formal theories of probability do and can do when dealing with compound random situations in which they are offered opportunities to integrate different probabilistic lines of reasoning. 5. Complexity and Error Analysis of Numerical Methods for Wireless Channels, SDE, Random Variables and Quantum Mechanics
Abstract : This thesis consists of the four papers which consider different aspects of stochastic process modeling, error analysis, and minimization of computational cost. In Paper I, we construct a Multipath Fading Channel (MFC) model for wireless channels with noise introduced through scatterers flipping on and off. READ MORE
