  1. 1. Nonmalignant health effects of arsenic exposure

    Author : Mahfuzar Rahman; Per Gustavsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : arsenic; case-control study; cross-sectional study; diabetes mellitus; drinking water; epidemiology; exposure; keratosis; public health. hypertension; risk factors; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises a series of studies concerning occupational and environmental exposure to arsenic and some novel chronic health effects of this element, namely diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Substantial prevalence of the well-known skin manifestations of arsenic ingestion was also found to occur as a result of environmental exposure through drinking water. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hydrogeological and geochemical assessment of aquifer systems with geogenic arsenic in Southeastern Bangladesh : Targeting low arsenic aquifers for safe drinking water supplies in Matlab

    Author : Mattias von Brömssen; Prosun Bhattacharya; David Polya; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arsenic; Bangladesh; drinking water; groundwater; sustainability; geochemistry; hydrogeology; modelling;

    Abstract : Naturally occurring arsenic (As) in Holocene aquifers in Bangladesh have undermined a long success of supplying the population with safe drinking water. Arsenic is mobilised in reducing environments through reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides. READ MORE

  4. 4. Arsenic accumulation in plants for food and phytoremediation : Influence by external factors

    Author : Claes Bergqvist; Maria Greger; Sylvia Lindberg; Lena Ma; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arsenic; accumulation; availability; distribution; habitat; phy-toremediation; rhizosphere; redox potential; speciation; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Arsenic (As) appears in the environment as various As species, which may vary in plant uptake and toxicity. Moreover, As exposure may vary between habitat due to availability and speciation, both of which are influenced by redox potential. To decrease As uptake, addition of silicate may be a tool. 5. 5. Arsenic Influences Virus Replication in Experimental Coxsackievirus B3 Infection

    Author : Ylva Molin; Nils-Gunnar Ilbäck; Eva Hjelm; Göran Friman; Jonas Blomberg; Gunnar Nordberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coxsackievirus B3; trace elements; arsenic; selenium; virology; IFN-γ; NFκB; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Trace elements are essential for the host defence against infections, and during common infections, the balance of trace elements is changed in serum and tissues. Supplementation with selenium (Se), an essential trace element, is known to decrease the severity of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection in mice. READ MORE
