  1. 11. Studies on the links between white adipose tissue phenotype and the circulatory system

    Author : Jesper Bäckdahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is defined by an unhealthy excess of white adipose tissue (WAT). Adipose derived weight gains and losses are linked to changes in two other independent cardiovascular risk factors: hypertension, and arterial stiffness. READ MORE

  2. 12. Lipid Micro Emboli in Cardiac Surgery

    Author : Atli Eyjolfsson; Thoraxkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on five studies. It includes the characterization of lipid micro emboli in shed mediastinal blood during cardiac surgery. The reuse of blood directly by cardiotomy suction is a common practice in order to reduce the need of blood transfusions. READ MORE

  3. 13. Pathophysiological mechanisms involved in flap ischemia and its treatment : an experimental study with emphasis on the effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide and spinal cord stimulation on ischemia and manipulation of microcirculation in flaps

    Author : Giulio Gherardini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ischemia; microcirculation; Calcitonin gene-related peptide; spinal cord stimulation;

    Abstract : Flap surgery and microsurgery have expanded the therapeutic options of reconstructive surgery. Partial or total flap necrosis, due to circulatory and metabolic events, is, however, still a significant problem for the plastic surgeon. READ MORE

  4. 14. Extracting Cardiac Information From the Pressure Sensors of a Dialysis Machine

    Author : Mattias Holmer; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hemodialysis; extracorporeal pressure signals; cardiac pressure signal; heart rate; ventricular premature beats; venous needle dislodgement;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis in biomedical engineering deals with cardiac monitoring using the built-in extracorporeal blood pressure sensors of a hemodialysis machine. Patients treated with hemodialysis often suffer from cardiovascular disease. READ MORE

  5. 15. Effects of physical activity and gravitational stress on cardiovascular control

    Author : Patrik Sundblad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : leg exercise; posture; blood pressure; heart rate; cardiovascular model; heart function; stroke volume; tilting; orthostasis; simulated weightlessness; long-term hypokinesia;

    Abstract : The long-term goal of the present work was to characterize the responses to gravitational challenges in exercising humans after long-term head-down-tilt bedrest (HDT). HDT is a simulation of weightlessness with respect to effects on the systemic circulation, and previous studies in resting men have suggested that impairments of arterial baroreflexes contribute to the orthostatic intolerance seen after HDT and spaceflight.
