  1. 1. The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS): Ascertainment, risk factors, and problems with classification

    Author : Bengt Littorin; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; type 1; stress; register; life events; incidence; ICA; family characteristics; GADA; epidemiology; diabetes mellitus; classification; Ascertainment; BMI; type 2; unclassifiable; year of diagnosis.; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The Diabetes Incidence Study in Sweden (DISS) registers diabetes in young adults aged 15-34 years in Sweden. This thesis aims to validate the ascertainment, methods in the classification of diabetes, and putative etiological factors such as family background, psychological stress, and BMI, that may affect the incidence of diabetes in young adults, in the DISS registry. 2. 2. Design and analysis of response selective samples in observational studies

    Author : Maria Grünewald; Ola Hössjer; Keith Humphreys; Marie Reilly; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ascertainment; missing data; outcome dependent sampling; response selective samples; sequential design; stochastic EM algorithm; Mathematical statistics; Matematisk statistik; Mathematical Statistics; matematisk statistik;

    Abstract : Outcome dependent sampling may increase efficiency in observational studies. It is however not always obvious how to sample efficiently, and how to analyze the resulting data without introducing bias. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fetal Anomalies : Surveillance and Diagnostic Accuracy of Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    Author : Hashem Amini; Ove Axelsson; Johan Wikström; Pelle Lindqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pregnancy termination; fetal anomalies; antenatal diagnosis; ultrasound; second trimester; fetal MRI; CNS anomalies; pregnancy management; non-CNS anomalies; fetal autopsy; birth defects registry; ascertainment; spina bifida; cleft lip palate; Obstetrics and women s diseases; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : The aims were to investigate the accuracy of ultrasound in diagnosis of structural fetal anomalies with special focus on false positive findings (I), to evaluate the additional value of second trimester fetal MRI on pregnancy management (II-III) and to estimate the ascertainment in the Swedish Birth Defects Registry and incidence of spina bifida and cleft lip/palate (IV). Retrospectively, 328 fetal autopsies were identified where pregnancies were terminated due to ultrasonographically diagnosed fetal anomalies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Statistical genetic analysis of family data

    Author : Benjamin H Yip; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Variance component; ascertainment; population-based family data; Generalized linear mixed model; binary trait; quantitative genetics;

    Abstract : The importance of genetic determinants and risk factors of diseases has been consistently recognized in genetic epidemiology, which is one of the fastest growing areas in genomic medicine. Familial clustering is a common characteristic of genetic related phenotypes, providing vital insights into the etiology of diseases by establishing the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors. 5. 5. Methodological aspects on excess cancer riskafter exposure to ionizing radiation

    Author : Erik Holmberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ionizing radiation; skin haemangioma; breast cancer; parathyroid adenoma; excess cancer risk; bias; confounding; risk models; pooled analysis.;

    Abstract : Aims. The aims of this study were to establish a cohort of persons treated with radiotherapy for skin haemangioma in childhood and study the excess risk of cancer after exposure to ionizing radiation. READ MORE
