    Keywords : Chronic lymphocytic leukemia; Immunodeficiency; Hypogammaglobulinemia; IgG subclass; Pneumococci; Pneumococcal vaccine; Polysaccharide vaccine; Protein-conjugate vaccine; Aspergillosis; Bronchoalveolar lavage; Invasive fungal disease; Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia; Myelodysplastic syndrome; Azacitidine; Eltrombopag; Thrombocytopenia; Thrombopoietin receptor; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis is to improve knowledge about the prevention of infectious and bleeding complications in patients with hematological malignancies, primarily in those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and myelodysplatic syndrome (MDS).Hypogammaglobulinemia, impaired production of immunoglobulins (Ig), is an established risk factor for infection, but the impact of IgG pure subclass deficiency (IgG subclass deficiency with adequate production of IgG, IgA, and IgM) has been debated. 2. 2. Analysis of Secondary Metabolites from Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium nalgiovense : Antimicrobial Compounds from Filamentous Fungi Isolated from Extreme Environments

    Author : Stefan Svahn; Lars Bohlin; Björn Olsen; Ulf Göransson; Erja Chryssanthou; Douglas Kinghorn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aspergillus fumigatus; Penicillium nalgiovense; secondary metabolites; invasive aspergillosis; elicitation; gliotoxin; bis methyl gliotoxin; amphotericin B; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the cultivation and extraction of filamentous fungi isolated from extreme environments in the search for new antibiotic compounds. Filamentous fungi are a rich source of medicines including antibiotics, and it is believed that many currently unknown fungal species and bioactive fungal metabolites remain to be discovered. 3. 3. Invasive fungal disease in immunocompromised hosts with focus on diagnostics

    Author : Helena Hammarström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; invasive fungal disease; diagnosis; 1; 3-β-d-glucan; hematological malignancies; hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; HIV; lung transplant recipients; bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome;

    Abstract : Invasive fungal diseases (IFDs) are severe conditions affecting immunocompromised patients. The primary aim of this thesis was to explore different methods for diagnosis of IFD in different groups of immunocompromised patients. Papers I and II included patients with hematologic disorders. 4. 4. Catalytic and Structural Properties of Heme-containing Fatty Acid Dioxygenases : Similarities of Fungal Dioxygenases and Cyclooxygenases

    Author : Ulrike Garscha; Ernst Oliw; Per-Johan Jakobsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; dioxygenase; prostaglandin H synthase; Gaeumannomyces graminis; Aspergilli; hydroperoxide isomerase; linoleate diol synthase; cytochrome P450; oxylipin; Pharmaceutical pharmacology; Farmaceutisk farmakologi; Farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : 7,8-Linoleate diol synthase (7,8-LDS) of the take-all pathogen of wheat, Gaeumannomyces graminis, converts linoleic acid to 8R-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acid (8-HPODE) by 8-dioxygenase activity (8-DOX), and further isomerizes the hydroperoxide to 7S,8S-dihydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (7,8-DiHODE) by hydroperoxide isomerase activity. Sequence alignment showed homology to prostaglandin H synthase (PGHS), and both enzymes share structural and catalytic properties. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on laboratory diagnosis of fungal infection and antifungal susceptibility

    Author : Erja Chryssanthou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are serious complications in immunocompromised hosts. Neutropenic patients with haematological malignancies or after transplantation are at risk of developing deep Candida or Aspergillus infections. READ MORE
