  1. 16. Transmission Electron Microscopy of Graphene and Hydrated Biomaterial Nanostructures : Novel Techniques and Analysis

    Author : Sultan Akhtar; Klaus Leifer; Hilborn Jöns; Stefano Rubino; Marco Cantoni; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Graphene flakes; magnetic beads DNA coils; hydrated biomaterials; transmission electron microscopy; focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy; bright-field dark-field imaging; high resolution imaging; electron diffraction and cryogenic temperatures; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) on light element materials and soft matters is problematic due to electron irradiation damage and low contrast. In this doctoral thesis techniques were developed to address some of those issues and successfully characterize these materials at high resolution. READ MORE

  2. 17. Ethanol from lignocellulose : Management of by-products of hydrolysis

    Author : Björn Alriksson; J Leif Jönsson; Vincent Eijsink; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ethanol; Lignocellulose; Detoxification; Genetic engineering; Enzyme production; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Fuel ethanol can be produced from lignocellulosic materials, such as residues from agriculture and forestry. The polysaccharides of lignocellulose are converted to sugars by hydrolysis and the sugars can then be fermented to ethanol using microorganisms. However, during hydrolysis a wide range of by-products are also generated. READ MORE

  3. 18. Acetylation of polysaccharides in plant cell wall : with a focus on woody species

    Author : Prashant Mohan Pawar; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Plant cell wall in woody tissues is a complex matrix, which consists of cellulose, matrix polysaccharides and lignin. The matrix polysaccharides are substituted with acetyl group that are hypothesised to play important roles in determining properties of these polysaccharides. READ MORE

  4. 19. Use of feruloyl esterases for chemoenzymatic synthesis of bioactive compounds

    Author : Io Antonopoulou; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biokemisk processteknik; Biochemical Process Engineering;

    Abstract : Feruloyl esterases (FAEs, EC 3.1.1.73) represent a subclass of carboxylic acid esterases that under normal conditions catalyze the hydrolysis of the ester bond between hydroxycinnamic acids (ferulic acid, sinapic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid) and arabinose residues in plant cell walls. 5. 20. Wheat Gluten -Based Materials and Composites: Extrusion, Casting and Antimicrobial Properties

    Author : Hasan Türe; Mikael Hedenqvist; José-Maria Lagaron; KTH; []
    Keywords : wheat gluten; extrusion; urea; montmorillonite; sol-gel process; hybrid materials; casting; compression moulding; potassium sorbate; antifungal; plasticiser; thermal; mechanical and barrier properties.;

    Abstract : The use of bio-based polymers as packaging materials has gained much attention due to increasing environmental concerns regarding non-biodegradable petroleum-derived plastics. Wheat gluten (WG) is a valuable renewable resource for the production of bio-based materials because of its low price, biodegradability, good film-forming properties and good gas barrier properties under dry conditions.
