  1. 11. The Extremes of Neutrino Astronomy : From Fermi Bubbles with IceCube to Ice Studies with ARIANNA

    Author : Elisabeth Unger; Allan Hallgren; Olga Botner; Antonio Capone; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astroparticle physics; neutrino telescopes; IceCube; Fermi bubbles; ARIANNA; horizontal propagation; surface wave propagation; Fysik med inriktning mot elementarpartikelfysik; Physics with specialization in Elementary Particle Physics; High Energy Physics; Högenergifysik;

    Abstract : The Fermi bubbles are extended regions of hard gamma-ray emission which were discovered with Fermi-LAT data to exist above and below the Galactic Center. In order to explain the origin of the gamma-rays, different theories are proposed. READ MORE

  2. 12. Supersymmetry vis-à-vis Observation : Dark Matter Constraints, Global Fits and Statistical Issues

    Author : Yashar Akrami; Joakim Edsjö; Lars Bergström; Roberto Trotta; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; supersymmetry; cosmology of theories beyond the Standard Model; dark matter; gamma rays; dwarf galaxies; direct detection; statistical techniques; scanning algorithms; genetic algorithms; statistical coverage; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; Cosmology; Kosmologi; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : Weak-scale supersymmetry is one of the most favoured theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics that elegantly solves various theoretical and observational problems in both particle physics and cosmology. In this thesis, I describe the theoretical foundations of supersymmetry, issues that it can address and concrete supersymmetric models that are widely used in phenomenological studies. READ MORE

  3. 13. Studies of dark matter annihilation and production in the Universe

    Author : Carl Niblaeus; Joakim Edsjö; Riccardo Catena; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dark matter; neutrinos; astroparticle physics; indirect detection; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : In this PhD thesis we investigate various aspects of particle dark matter. The proper identification of dark matter developed during the second half of the twentieth century to become one of the biggest endeavours in modern physics and astronomy. READ MORE

  4. 14. Cosmological Dark Matter and the Isotropic Gamma-Ray Background : Measurements and Upper Limits

    Author : Alexander Sellerholm; Jan Conrad; Karl Mannheim; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dark matter theory; dark matter simulations; dark matter experiments; isotropic gamma-ray background; Fermi gamma-ray space telescope; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background, as measured by the Fermi gamma ray space telescope, and its implications for indirect detection of dark matter. We describe the measurement of the isotropic background, including also an alternative analysis method besides the one published by the Fermi-LAT collaboration. READ MORE

  5. 15. Exploring the potentials of next-generation, wavelength-shifting, optical sensors for IceCube

    Author : Jakob Beise; Erin O'Sullivan; Christian Ohm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neutrino Physics; Astroparticle Physics; Supernovae; Wavelength Shifters; IceCube;

    Abstract : The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has sensitivity to MeV electron antineutrinos from core-collapse supernovae through an excess of the detection rate over the background. Wavelength-shifting sensors have the potential to greatly increase photon collection making it a promising candidate for improving the measurement of the supernova neutrino light curve in IceCube-Gen2.
