1. Electrical Properties of Gold-related Defect Complexes in Silicon
Abstract : This thesis describes three extensive experiments concerning the properties of gold as an impurity atom in crystalline silicon. The first study is an investigation of the effect of phosphorus diffusion on the distribution of gold atoms within a silicon crystal. READ MORE

2. Quasicrystal Approximants in the RE-Au-SM systems (RE = Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb; SM = Si, Ge) : Syntheses, structures and properties
Abstract : In this study, new Tsai-type 1/1 quasicrystal approximants (ACs) in the RE-Au-SM systems (RE = Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb; SM = Si, Ge) were synthesized using high temperature synthesis techniques such as self-flux, arc-melting-annealing and novel arc-melting-self-flux methods. The syntheses not only provided appropriate samples for the intended structural and physical property measurements but could also be adapted to other systems, especially where crystal growth is a challenge. 3. Direct Nanoprototyping of Functional Materials via Focused Electron Beam
Abstract : During recent years the demand for nanoscale materials with tailor-made functional properties as bulk species, is continuously and progressively rising for such fields as e.g. micro- and nano-electronics, plasmonics, spintronics, bio-technology, bio-sensing and life sciences. READ MORE

4. Heterogeneous Integration of Shape Memory Alloysfor High-Performance Microvalves
Abstract : This thesis presents methods for fabricating MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS) actuators and high-flow gas microvalves using wafer-level integration of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in the form of wires and sheets. The work output per volume of SMA actuators exceeds that of other microactuation mechanisms, such as electrostatic, magnetic and piezoelectric actuation, by more than an order of magnitude, making SMA actuators highly promising for applications requiring high forces and large displacements. 5. Wind-induced vibrations in tall timber buildings : Design standards, experimental and numerical modal analyses
Abstract : Climate change and densification of cities are two major global challenges. Inthe building and construction industry, there are great expectations that tall timberbuildings will constitute one of the most sustainable solutions. First, verticalurban growth is energy and resource-efficient. READ MORE
