1. Influence of Global Composition and Local Environment on the Spectroscopic and Magnetic Properties of Metallic Alloys
Abstract : Theoretical investigations of spectroscopic and magnetic properties of metallic systems in the bulk, as well as in nanostructured materials, have been performed within the density functional theory. The major part of the present work studies the differences between binding energies of electrons tightly bound to the atoms, the so-called core electrons (in contrast with the valence electrons), that is, core-level binding energy shift (CLS). 2. Single-photon multiple ionisation of atoms and molecules investigated by coincidence spectroscopy : Site-specific effects in acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide
Abstract : In this thesis, multiple ionisation processes of free atoms and molecules upon single photon absorption are studied by means of a versatile multi-electron-ion coincidence spectroscopy method based on a magnetic bottle, primarily in combination with synchrotron radiation. The latter offered the possibility to access not only valence but also core levels, revealing processes, which promote the target systems into different charge states. READ MORE

3. A Study of the Adhesion Strength of Plasma Sprayed Coatings
Abstract : Surface preparation prior to thermal spraying is a key factor in ensuring a good adhesion of the coating onto the part to be coated. Surface pre-treatment conditions and methods have mainly been developed experimentally and have changed little over the years. READ MORE

4. Tailoring of Contacts on Silicon Carbide - Procedures and Mechanisms
Abstract : Silicon carbide (SiC) exhibits very good electrical, thermal, chemical and mechanical properties which make it suitable for the next generation of wide band gap electronic devices, where silicon (Si) cannot be used due to its limitations with respect to the mentioned properties. Nickel (Ni) and Tantalum (Ta) are among the metals used for the contact formation. READ MORE

5. Investigation of surface and interface phenomena in silicon and silicon dioxide systems
Abstract : The characterization of a thin silicon dioxide (SiO2) film close to the silicon dioxide -silicon interface is very important in understanding and improving solid state electronic and optoelectronic devices. The refractive index, the dielectric constant, and the density of oxide film, are all related to the chemical composition and porosity (voids) of the films. READ MORE
