  1. 1. Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures

    Author : Fredrik Johansson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contact guidance; neuron; axon; fibroblast; macrophage; polymethylmethacrylate; porous silicon; nanowire; magnetic; immunoresponse; nanoimprint lithography; haptotaxis;

    Abstract : The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Microdispensing, Neurite Guidance and Galectins

    Author : Per Gustavsson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vävnadskultur; histokemi; cytokemi; Histologi; tissue culture; histochemistry; cytochemistry; Histology; Schwann cells; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; DRG; neurite guidance; galectins; inkjet; microdispensing; peripheral nervous system; nerve regeneration; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The present thesis describes development of a microdispenser-based technique to create of protein patterns for neurite guidance. The same technique was also developed to allow direct positioning of dissociated cells, including neurons, on cell culture substrates. Finally the role of galectin-3 and 8 during nerve regeneration was investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nanowires for Cell Research

    Author : Waldemar Hällström; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : Nanotoxicology; Nanowires; Nanotubes; Nerve Cells; Cell Probing; Force Measurements; Nanotechnology; Axonal Guidance; Fysicumarkivet A:2010:Hällström;

    Abstract : This study explores the interaction between living biological cells and semiconductor nanowires. Biological cells are highly complex and dynamic entities, every one of them with individual characteristics and a high degree of internal and external communication. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cell therapy for spinal cord injury, studies of motor and sensory systems

    Author : Christoph Hofstetter; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Nervous system; spinal cord injury; pseudorabies virus; axonal tracing; functional MRI; stereology; Rho-kinases; transplantation; stem cells; neurogenin2; allodynia;

    Abstract : Spinal cord injury represents a significant medical concern, affecting thousands of individuals each year. The majority of victims are young males harmed by traffic accidents, violence, and falls. Severe spinal cord injury interupts nerve fiber pathways connecting the brain and the rest of the body.
