  1. 1. Neuroprotection and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Dag Welin; Lev N. Novikov; Lars B. Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dorsal root ganglion; Motoneuron; Axonal reaction; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve regeneration; N-acetylcysteine; Hand surgery; Handkirurgi; Anatomy; Anatomi; anatomi; Human Anatomy; handkirurgi; hand surgery;

    Abstract : Following microsurgical reconstruction of injured peripheral nerves, severed axons are able to undergo spontaneous regeneration. However, the functional result is always unsatisfactory with poor sensory recovery and reduced motor function. READ MORE

  2. 2. Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures

    Author : Fredrik Johansson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contact guidance; neuron; axon; fibroblast; macrophage; polymethylmethacrylate; porous silicon; nanowire; magnetic; immunoresponse; nanoimprint lithography; haptotaxis;

    Abstract : The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. READ MORE

  3. 3. On traumatic lesion to the spinal cord and dorsal spinal roots : factors influencing axonal regrowth across the border between the central and peripheral nervous system in the rat and man

    Author : Tomas Lindholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; man; axotomy; regeneration; motoneuron; ; CNS; PNS; tenascin; macrophages; BBB; scar; neuregulin; ErbB3 4; semaphorin; neuropilin; VEGF; olfactory system; DRG; DRT; SNT; SNC.;

    Abstract : Nerve cells are depending on their environment. Glial cells, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) make up a totally different milieu and characteristics than the distinguishing qualities of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), where the nerve cells are surrounded by Schwann cells. 4. 4. Cell activation and nerve regeneration following peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Annika Widerberg; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; nerve regeneration; Nerve injury; conditioning lesion; nerve graft; tourniquet compression; vibration; DRG; Schwann cell; p75; CPON; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology;

    Abstract : The effect of short time vibration exposure and tourniquet compression on nerve regeneration in rats was studied with special reference to cell activation. One of the hindlimbs was conditioned by either vibration exposure (5 hours / day - 5 consecutive days) or compression (150-300 mmHg for 30-120 minutes), which was followed by a recovery period of 0-7 days. 5. 5. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats.
