1. Cholinesterase inhibitors in Alzheimer's disease : an experimental study on mechanisms of interatcion with muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotection
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms beyond the interaction of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) with the cholinergic system in brain, with emphasis on their regulatory and mechanistic effects on subtypes of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotective properties. To investigate muscarinic receptor subtypes in frontal cortices of AD brains, the muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine, AF-DX 116, HHSiD, p-F-HHSiD and himbacine were used in receptor binding assays. 2. Reverse genetic studies of Enterovirus replication
Abstract : Enteroviruses belong to the Picornaviridae family and are small icosahedral viruses with RNA genomes of positive polarity, containing a single open reading frame. They mostly cause mild or asymptomatic infections, but also a wide array of diseases including: poliomyelitis, encephalitis, gastroenteritis, aseptic meningitis, myocarditis, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, hepatitis and respiratory diseases, ranging from severe infections to the common cold. Abstract : In terms of genome size, the hepatitis B virus is the smallest virus known to infect humans and its compactness with multiple overlapping reading frames puts restraints on the emergence of mutations. In the papers included in this thesis we aimed to investigate genetic variation within the precore and core promoter region and to describe the origin, spread and diversification of HBV genotype A. 5. Graded lie algebras in local algebra and rational homotopy
Abstract : This thesis consists of three papers, [A – C]The old conjecture that Poincaré-series of local noetherian rings are rational was disproved by Anick in 1979. Building upon his counter-example, as analyzed by Löfwall-Roos, I construct a Gorenstein ring with transcendental Poincaré-series; by a method of Roos this also gives a manifold whose loopspace has transcendental Poinaré-Betti series.
