1. Murine plasmacytomagenesis : an experimental model of B-cell neoplasia
Abstract : A chromosomal translocation which results in the illegitimate activation of the c-myc proto-oncogene by one of the three immunoglobulin (Ig) loci is invariably associated with human Burkitt's Lymphoma (BL), mouse plasmacytoma (MPC) and rat immunocytomas (RIC). In the MPC system a genetic predisposition linked to the BALB/c strain has been suggested. READ MORE

2. Peripheral Regulation of Pain and Itch
Abstract : Pain and itch are diverse sensory modalities, transmitted by the somatosensory nervous system. Stimuli such as heat, cold, mechanical pain and itch can be transmitted by different neuronal populations, which show considerable overlap with regards to sensory activation. READ MORE

3. Immunopathogenesis of schistosomiasis mansoni : Immunity and pathology in a primary and a secondary infection following chemotherapy in the mouse and the baboo models
Abstract : This thesis describes a series of experiments aimed at elucidating the mechanisms ofimmunity and pathology elicited by both a primary infection and a reinfection exposure toSchistosoma mansoni following chemotherapy. The effects of a single large cercarial doseand a cumulatively equivalent dose, administered as multiple small doses are compared. READ MORE

4. Mycobacterial infection: Immune evasion, host susceptibility and immunological markers of diagnostic importance
Abstract : IIn the first study, we investigated the functional implications of prolonged TLR signalling on IFN-γ mediated killing of mycobacteria by murine macrophages in vitro. TLR2, but not TLR4 ligation interfered with IFN-γ mediated killing of mycobacteria in macrophages. READ MORE

5. Helicobacter pylori infection in a mouse model: Development, optimization and inhibitory effects of antioxidants
Abstract : Helicobacter pylori is a human pathogen strongly associated with chronic type B gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma. Our aims were to establish a mouse model of H. pylori infection, to study pathogenesis of gastritis and gastric cancer and to investigate new treatment strategies in this model. READ MORE
