1. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system
Abstract : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. READ MORE

2. Design and Fabrication of III-V Semiconductor Devices for Millimetre- and Submillimetre Wave Applications
Abstract : Devices (various types of diodes) have been fabricated in several different III-V semiconductors (AlxGa1-xAs, In1-xGaxAs, and InAs). The III- V compound semiconductors lend themselves well to high frequency applications due to the high electron mobility that can be obtained. READ MORE

3. Methodology for Handling Missing Data in Nonlinear Mixed Effects Modelling
Abstract : To obtain a better understanding of the pharmacokinetic and/or pharmacodynamic characteristics of an investigated treatment, clinical data is often analysed with nonlinear mixed effects modelling. The developed models can be used to design future clinical trials or to guide individualised drug treatment. READ MORE

4. Computer Simulations of Heterogenous Biomembranes
Abstract : Molecular modeling has come a long way during the past decades and in the current thesis modeling of biological membranes is the focus. The main method of choice has been classical Molecular Dynamics simulations and for this technique a model Hamiltonian, or force field (FF), has been developed for lipids to be used for biological membranes. 5. Genetic Sex Differences in Early Human Neuronal Development : An Investigation in Embryo Tissue and Embryonic Stem Cells
Abstract : Sex differences in the human body affect many different organs and tissues, some of them have an effect on the human brain and its development. In the developing nervous system, sex differences can bias the number or functionality of neurons, glial cells or synapses. As a result, neural networks might develop with a sex-specific bias.
