  1. 1. Rock Mass Response to Coupled Mechanical Thermal Loading : Äspö Pillar Stability Experiment, Sweden

    Author : J. Christer Andersson; Håkan Stille; Charles Fairhurst; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Yielding; Spalling; Rock mass strength; Confinement; Fracturing; Tensile failure; Shear failure; Displacement; Acoustic Emission; Heating; Stress; Back calculation; Radial expansion; Mining engineering; Gruvteknik;

    Abstract : The geological disposal of nuclear waste, in underground openings and the long-term performance of these openings demand a detailed understanding of fundamental rock mechanics. A full scale field experiment: Äspö Pillar Stability Experiment was conducted at a depth of 450 m in sparsely fractured granitic rock to examine the rock mass response between two deposition holes. 2. 2. Calculation of scatter in cone beam CT : Steps towards a virtual tomograph

    Author : Alexandr Malusek; Michael Sandborg; Gudrun Alm Carlsson; Michael Ljungberg; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : Scattered photons—shortly scatter—are generated by interaction processes when photon beams interact with matter. In diagnostic radiology, they deteriorate image quality since they add an undesirable signal that lowers the contrast in projection radiography and causes cupping and streak artefacts in computed tomography (CT). 3. 3. Biomechanics of back extension torque production about the lumbar spine

    Author : Karl Daggfeldt; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to develop a realistic mechanical description of lumbar back extension torque production. Such a description is desirable for understanding how back extension torque is generated as well as how the spine and surrounding structures are loaded during back extension tasks. READ MORE

  4. 4. The Quantification of Society. A Study of a Swedish Research Institute and Survey-Based Social Science

    Author : Christopher Kullenberg; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : quantification; survey; social sciences; SOM Institute; epistemic practice; center of calculation; Actor-Network theory; welfare state;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the contemporary history of quantitative surveys in Sweden. The core epistemic practice of constructing surveys is examined empirically through a case study of the SOM Institute (Samhälle, Opinion, Medier) at University of Gothenburg. The SOM Institute has performed surveys in Sweden since 1986. READ MORE

  5. 5. Calculating long-term settlement in soft clays - with special focus on the Gothenburg region

    Author : Mats Olsson; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soft clay; long-term settlement; creep; test sites;

    Abstract : Long-term settlement in clay constitutes an engineering challenge in road design and construction in areas with deep deposits of soft clay. Soil improvement and construction of building foundations or embankments can be quite complicated and expensive in such areas. Construction costs need to be balanced against high maintenance costs.
