1. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, EHEC.Microbiological diagnosis, characterisation and clinical bacteriological aspects
Abstract : Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) constitutes a group of E. coli that in the past two decades has been the cause of several outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease. The microorganism causes hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in 5-10% of the patients, 30% of the HUS patients develop remaining kidney injuries. READ MORE

2. Challenge models and biomarkers of human intestinal barrier function
Abstract : The intestinal barrier is an essential component in maintaining human health, and several diseases and disorders have been associated with a disrupted intestinal barrier function. To evaluate the efficacy of different interventions intended to strengthen intestinal barrier function, there is a need for both appropriate challenge models as well as easily accessible biomarkers. 3. Health hazards associated with dissemination of bacterial strains in waste water recycling
Abstract : Treated waste effluents with low levels of chemical and microbiological contents are used for domestic, industrial, agricultural and aquacultural purposes worldwide, and it is estimated that one tenth or more of the world’s population consume food produced through irrigation with wastewater. Treated hospital waste effluents may contain pathogenic and drug resistant bacteria, which constitutes the most dangerous single risk factor for dissemination of pathogenic and drug resistant organisms to the environment. 5. Structural studies of some bacterial polysaccharides and extension of a method for lipid A cleavage
Abstract : The focus of the work presented in this thesis has been to study the structures of the capsular polysaccharide from Serratia marcescens O14:K12, and the O-antigen polysaccharides from Hafnia alvei strain 10457 and Vibrio cholerae serogroup 037. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was the primary technique employed. S. READ MORE
