  1. 16. A Unified Multitude : Experimental Studies of Bacterial Chromosome Organization

    Author : Eva Garmendia; Diarmaid Hughes; Linus Sandegren; John R. Roth; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial evolution; chromosome organization and structure; chromosomal inversions; EF-Tu; horizontal gene transfer; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Bacteria are many, old and varied; different bacterial species have been evolving for millions of years and show many disparate life-styles and types of metabolism. Nevertheless, some of the characteristics regarding how bacteria organize their chromosomes are relatively conserved, suggesting that they might be both ancient and important, and that selective pressures inhibit their modification. 2. 17. Evolutionary Mechanisms Shaping Bacterial Translation Termination

    Author : Shreya Pundir; Suparna Sanyal; Martin Ott; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ribosome; Protein; Release Factor; Translation; Termination; Stop codon; Evolution; Mutation; Kinetics; Cryo-EM; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : Translation termination in bacteria involves precise reading of stop codons (UAA, UAG, UGA) and coordinated peptidyl-tRNA hydrolysis by the class-I release factors (RFs) on the ribosome (70S). This thesis investigates the evolutionary and post-translational modification mechanisms of these RFs and the concurrent effect on bacterial translation termination. READ MORE

  3. 18. Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance

    Author : Franziska Pietsch; Diarmaid Hughes; Josep Casadesús; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ciprofloxacin; rifampicin; bacterial fitness; compensation; mutation rate; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major global threat to modern medicine. The rapid dissemination of resistant pathogens and the associated loss of efficacy of many important drugs needs to be met with the development of new antibiotics and alternative treatment options. 4. 19. Evolutionary transitions across the tree of life : Phylogenomic case studies in environmental archaea, bacteria and eukaryotes

    Author : Max Emil Schön; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Fabien Burki; David Moreira; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolutionary transitions; environmental sequencing; metagenomics; single-cell genomics; phylogenomics; haloarchaea; Hikarchaeia; Rickettsiales; Picozoa; plastid evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Microbes form the majority of life on Earth, but have been systematically underrepresented in historical research. The sequencing revolutions of the last two decades have completely changed the way we can study microbial genomic information, giving us the means to probe ever deeper into their evolution. Abstract : This thesis focuses on the genomic study of symbionts of two different groups of hymenopterans: bees and ants. Both groups of insects have major ecological impact, and investigating their microbiomes increases our understanding of their health, diversity and evolution. READ MORE
