1. Calibration and quality assessment of DESCARTES : grabsampler for stratospheric tracers
Abstract : DESCARTES is a light-weight, balloon-borne grab sampler for stratospheric long-lived tracers developed at the University of Cambridge. 33 flights have been performed with two versions of the instrument at northern latitudes by the DESCARTES team at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna during the years 1997-2000. 2. Prevention of intimal hyperplasia after balloon angioplasty and / or stent insertion. or How to mend a broken heart - Just say NO
Abstract : Background: Restenosis is the most frequently occurring adverse event after percutaneous intravascular treatment of atherosclerotic lesions, which limits long-term patency of the intervention. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate if minimizing vascular injury during treatment by insertion of self-expanding stents or modifying the reparative mechanisms by local drug delivery can reduce restenosis. 3. Physical Aspects of Thermotherapy - A study of heat transport with a view to treatment optimisation
Abstract : Local treatment with the aim to destruct tissue by heating (thermotherapy) may in some cases be an alternative or complement to surgical methods, and has gained increased interest during the last decade. The major advantage of these, often minimally-invasive methods, is that the disease can be controlled with reduced treatment trauma and complications. READ MORE

4. Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a balloon catheter : experimental and clinical evaluation of a new form of treatment for menorrhagia
Abstract : Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a silicone balloon catheter is a new form of treatment for menorrhagia aimed at reducing menstrual blood loss. The purpose of the present work was to study, experimentally, the thermal effects on and the thermal conductivity of uterine tissue, to obtain a basis for the estimation of optimal treatment conditions by means of numerical analyses using a computer simulation model, to elucidate possible problems which may arise during the procedure, to evaluate how the patients tolerated this treatment and to judge which patients were suitable for this form of treatment and, finally, to study the uterine cavity after treatment and the long-term results of treatment. 5. Structure and function of the cytoskeleton in cardiac and skeletal muscle
Abstract : We have examined the functional and structural roles of the cytoskeletal protein desmin in cardiac and skeletal muscles using a genetically modified mouse (Des-/-) with the desmin gene ablated. Desmin forms filaments at the Z-disks in the striated muscle sarcomere, have connections to the sarcolemma and most likely align sarcomeres and whole cells. READ MORE
