  1. 6. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nina Svensson; Erik Sahlée; Hans Bergström; Anna Rutgersson; Søren Larsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary layer; Baltic Sea; stable conditions; low-level jet; sea breeze; boundary layer rolls; mesoscale effects; WRF; LIDAR;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 2. 7. Macroalgae in the Baltic Sea : responses to low salinity and nutrient enrichment in Ceramium and Fucus

    Author : Lena Bergström; Lars Ericson; Lena Kautsky; Erik Bonsdorff; Christine A Maggs; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; adaptation; asexual reproduction; Baltic Sea; Gulf of Bothnia; salinity; macroalgae; nutrients; sexual reproduction; stress; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The brackish Baltic Sea is a marginal environment for both marine and freshwater species. The rate of ecological differentiation is presumably high due to strong selection pressure from a gradient of decreasing salinity that has been present in its current state for only about 3 000 years. 3. 8. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Author : Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. READ MORE

  4. 9. Studies on Baltic Sea mysids

    Author : Martin Ogonowski; Sture Hansson; Jörgen Berge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mysids; hydroacoustics; Baltic Sea; abundance; stable isotopes; specific dynamic action SDA ; diel vertical migration; partial migration; trophic interactions; physiology; benthic-pelagic coupling; protein:DNA; C:N ratio; genetic structure; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Mysid shrimps (Mysidacea, Crustacea) are efficient zooplanktivores in both marine and freshwater systems as well as lipid rich prey for many species of fish.  Although some efforts have been made to study the role of mysids in the Baltic Sea, very few studies have been carried out in recent time and there are still knowledge gaps regarding various aspects of mysid ecology.
