  1. 1. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web

    Author : Norbert Häubner; Pauli Snoeijs; Jon Ågren; Rhena Schumann; Markku Viitasalo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Baltic Sea; carotenoids; astaxanthin; tocopherols; Vitamin E; thiamine; Vitamin B1; pelagic food web; eutrophication; M74; phytoplankton; zooplankton; sprat; Sprattus sprattus balticus; herring; Clupea harengus; salmon; Salmo salar; cod; Gadus morhua; High Performance Liquid Chromatography HPLC ; electrochemical detection ECD ;

    Abstract : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 3. 3. Environmentally relevant chemical disruptors of oxidative phosphorylation in Baltic Sea biota : Exposure and toxic potentials

    Author : Anna-Karin Dahlberg; Lillemor Asplund; Åke Bergman; Göran Marsh; Patrik Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxidative phosphorylation; OH-PBDEs; MeO-PBDEs; PBDEs; long-tailed duck Clangula hyemalis ; Baltic herring Clupea harengus ; Baltic blue mussel Mytilus trossulus x Mytilus edulis ; Baltic Sea; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on toxicity and occurrence of hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) in Baltic Sea biota. The aims were to assess OH-PBDEs potency for disruption of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and determine their and related compounds exposure in Baltic blue mussel, herring and long-tailed duck. 4. 4. Protein isolation from herring (Clupea harengus) using the pH-shift process - Protein yield, protein isolate quality and removal of food contaminants

    Author : Sofia Marmon; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; precipitation; acid; gelation; in vitro digestion; solubilization; herring; protein; salt solubility; pH; lipids; alkaline; transmission electron microscopy; dioxins;

    Abstract : Herring (Clupea harengus) contain valuable proteins but is difficult to process into high-quality foods due to its small size and high content of bones, heme-proteins and lipids. Herring is among the most abundant fish species in the world, but is currently utilized largely for fish meal and oil production. READ MORE
