  2. 2. Adrenergic stimulation of glucose uptake in brown adipocytes

    Author : Ekaterina Chernogubova; Tore Bengtsson; Barbara Cannon; Samuel Cushman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate adrenergically stimulated glucose uptake in brown adipose tissue (BAT) with the focus on receptor subtypes and intracellular signalling pathways. As a model system, we used primary cultured brown adipocytes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing Using In vitro Approaches

    Author : Helena Högberg; Anna Price; Barbara Cannon; Kevin Crofton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; toxikologi; Toxicology;

    Abstract : There is a great concern about children’s health as the developing brain in foetuses and children is much more vulnerable to injury caused by different classes of chemicals than the adult brain. This vulnerability is partly due to the fact that the adult brain is well protected against chemicals by the blood brain barrier (BBB) and children have increased absorption rates and diminished ability to detoxify many exogenous compounds, in comparison to that of adults. 4. 4. Limiting factors in ATP synthesis

    Author : Tatiana Kramarova; Barbara Cannon; Sharon Ackerman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ATP synthase; biosynthesis; assembly; uncoupling proteins; ATP ADP carrier; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim of the present study was to investigate the biosynthesis of the ATP synthase in various tissues, and to test hypotheses about possible models of activation of several mitochondrial proteins, the ATP/ADP translocase and UCPs, that could utilize the proton gradient, thus bypassing the ATP synthase. We have examined the role of the expression of the P1 isoform of the c-Fo subunit in the biogenesis of ATP synthase in brown adipose tissue. READ MORE

  5. 5. Role of caveolin-1 in brown adipose tissue

    Author : Charlotte L. Mattsson; Barbara Cannon; Paul Pilch; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; caveolin; brown adipose tissue; metabolism; signaling; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Caveolae are 50-100 nm invaginations in the plasma membrane. Caveolae and the protein caveolin-1 (Cav1) have been shown to be important in many signaling pathways in different cell types; however, in some cell types caveolae and Cav1 do not seem to affect the investigated signaling pathways.
