  1. 1. On methods for estimating oceanic flow

    Author : Jenny A. U. Nilsson; Peter Lundberg; Peter Sigray; Bert Rudels; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean monitoring techniques; Barotropic flow; Baroclinic flow; Hydraulic theory; Baltic Sea; Bahía de Concepción; Oceanography; Oceanografi; Oceanography; oceanografi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to estimate and possibly quantify ocean flow by utilizing conventional and novel observational methods as well as model results. Motionally induced voltages, from a cable-based observational system in the Baltic Sea, were analysed to determine their utility for ocean monitoring. READ MORE

  2. 2. Some aspects of the Atlantic ocean circulation

    Author : Rezwan Mohammad; Peter Lundberg; Johan Nilsson; Lawrence Mysak; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oceanography; Thermohaline circulation; Vertical mixing; Altimetry; Nordic Seas; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Abstract : The present thesis deals with the ocean circulation from two viewpoints: Pro primo, the dependence of the global thermohaline ocean circulation (THC) on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing processes in the interior of the ocean, and, pro secundo, the dynamics of the circulation in the Nordic Seas. The THC is found be crucially dependent on the parameterization of the small-scale vertical mixing, two types of which have been compared: The commonly used constant diffusivity and a, physically more plausible, stability-dependent parameterization. 3. 3. Exchange flows in estuaries and archipelagos

    Author : Petter Stenström; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Different aspects of the exchange of water and tracersbetween adjacent coastal basins, and between the coast and thesea, are addressed. Deviations from the inviscid hydraulicprediction of flow rates and interface heights in maximaltwo-layer exchange flows due to viscous effects are quantifiedby means of non-hydrostatic, three-dimensional numericalmodeling. 4. 4. A study of atmospheric variations on climatic and medium range time scales using bifurcation theory

    Author : Erland Källén; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with atmospheric variability on the long and medium range time scales as described by simplified, low-order models. On the climatic time scale of 0 (103 years) an energy balance and an ice-sheet model are used to investigate some aspects of the climatic record. READ MORE

  5. 5. Atmospheric circulation regimes and climate change

    Author : Jenny Brandefelt; Erland Källén; Jonas Nycander; Vim Verkley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmospheric large-scale circulation; greenhouse gas forcing; climate sensitivity; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Abstract : The Earth's atmosphere is expected to warm in response to increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG). The response of the Earth's complex and chaotic climate system to the GHG emissions is, however, difficult to assess. In this thesis, two issues of importance for the assessment of this response are studied. READ MORE
