1. Structural, Electronic and Reactive Properties of Pentapyridyl - Base Metal Complexes : Relevance for Water Oxidation Catalysis
Abstract : The rationalization of chemical-physical proprieties of transition metal complexes is fundamental in order to understand and tune their reactivity. In this thesis, a systematic investigation of the geometrical and electronic properties of [M(Py5OH)Cl]+ complexes (M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) has been performed, and their ability to act as molecular water oxidation catalysts has been probed. 2. Impact of Secondary Interactions in Asymmetric Catalysis
Abstract : This thesis deals with secondary interactions in asymmetric catalysis and their impact on the outcome of catalytic reactions. The first part revolves around the metal-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction and how interactions within the catalyst affect the stereochemistry. READ MORE

3. Catalytic Methods to Convert Allylic Substrates through Hydride and Proton Shifts : Transition Metal-Catalyzed and Organocatalyzed Approaches
Abstract : The present thesis describes the development of new catalytic protocols to transform allylic substrates into a wide variety of versatile carbonyl and vinyl organic compounds. All procedures that are described in this work have in common the existence of one or more hydrogen shifts as key steps in the mechanism of the reactions. READ MORE

4. Graphene: Applications in Surface Science Studies
Abstract : This thesis addresses how graphene can be a valuable asset for surface science studies. Using a combination of X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction, we take advantage of graphene’s sensitivity to changes in its chemical environment to obtain an atomic scale understanding of different reactions occurring above and below the film. 5. Selective Transformations of Allylic Compounds and Enol Derivatives : Synthesis of Fluorinated and Nitrogenated Scaffolds
Abstract : In this thesis, new synthetic methods to give access to molecules having fluorinated scaffolds and other polar functional groups have been developed. The methods give access to highly valuable organic compounds that may serve as building blocks in the synthesis of functionalized drug candidates. READ MORE
