1. Calibration and Reduction of Large-Scale Dynamic Models - Application to Wind Turbine Blades
Abstract : This thesis investigates the validity of structural dynamics models of wind turbine blades. An outlook on methods for model calibration to make models valid for their intended use is presented in the thesis. The intention is to make the models valid for robust predictions. The model validity is here assessed to be of hierarchical dual level. READ MORE

2. Bayesian Inference for Microwave Diagnostics at Joint European Torus
Abstract : The major goal of this thesis is to perform Bayesian inference jointly for electron kinetic profiles, a toroidal magnetic field correction, diagnostic sensitivities, and wall reflection properties given noisy measurements of four microwave diagnostics at the tokamak JET. Besides the measurements, this kind of inference considers prior knowledge, like profile length-scales, to update objectively the information about the physics parameters. READ MORE

3. Reliable Uncertainty Quantification in Statistical Learning
Abstract : Mathematical models are powerful yet simplified abstractions used to study, explain, and predict the behavior of systems of interest. This thesis is concerned with their latter application as predictive models. READ MORE

4. Statistical Sensor Calibration Algorithms
Abstract : The use of sensors is ubiquitous in our IT-based society; smartphones, consumer electronics, wearable devices, healthcare systems, industries, and autonomous cars, to name but a few, rely on quantitative measurements for their operations. Measurements require sensors, but sensor readings are corrupted not only by noise but also, in almost all cases, by deviations resulting from the fact that the characteristics of the sensors typically deviate from their ideal characteristics. 5. Phylogeny and macroevolution in Isoetes (Isoetales)
Abstract : This thesis has focused on the evolutionary history of Isoetes (Isoetales, Lycopsida), its phylogeny, megaspore morphology and evolutionary path through deep time. With a broadened sampling of species to include more of the worldwide diversity of the genus compared to previous work an unexpected sister to the rest of the genus was found. READ MORE
