  1. 1. A Gill Filament EROD Assay : Development and Application in Environmental Monitoring

    Author : Maria Jönsson; Ingvar Brandt; Björn Brunström; Kristian Ingebrigtsen; Håkan Olsén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; aquatic; benzo[a]pyrene; biomarker; CYP1A; environmental monitoring; EROD; fish; gill; indigo; PCB; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : A gill filament-based assay for the cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A)-catalysed activity ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) was developed in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and applied to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), saithe (Pollachius virens), and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor). Exposure to waterborne β-naphthoflavone (βNF; 10-6 M) induced branchial EROD activity in all species but the spotted wolffish. READ MORE

  2. 2. Automation, hyphenation and multidimensional chromatography for PAH analysis : Analytical techniques to simplify sample complexity

    Author : Hwanmi Lim; Roger Westerholm; Christoffer Bergvall; Stephen Wise; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; PAH; benzo[a]pyrene; B[a]P; carcinogenicity; cancer risk assessment; complex matrix; automation; hyphenation; multidimensional chromatography; two-dimensional; method translation; online fractionation; benz[j]aceanthrylene; B[j]A; relative potency factor; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : One group of organic environmental pollutants which are potentially hazardous to human health is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These compounds consist of two or more benzene rings in their structure among which benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is classified as a human carcinogen. READ MORE

  3. 3. Methods for Determination of Benzo(a)pyrene and High Molecular Weight (>300 Da) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Particulate Matter from Ambient Air and Vehicle Exhausts

    Author : Christoffer Bergvall; Roger Westerholm; Stephen Wise; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PAH; dibenzopyrene; benzo a pyrene; standard reference material; air particulate matter; diesel particulate matter; toxic equivalence factor; ultrasonic assisted extraction; accelerated solvent extraction; automation; online coupling; GC MC; LC GC MS; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Air pollution with particulate matter (PM) raises considerable concern because of its adverse effects on human health. For this reason, and because the mechanisms of PM toxicity are not fully known, there is an urgent need to determine the chemical constituents of atmospheric PM, especially PM emanating from traffic - a major source of urban PM. 4. 4. Binding of benzo(a)pyrene metabolites and derivatives to DNA : characterization using optical spectroscopy techniques

    Author : Ola Undeman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : DNA with covalently bound benzo(a)pyrene (BP) derivatives was studied with fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence decay measurements, fluorescence quenching measurements, light absorption and linear dichroism of flow oriented samples. The modified DNA was prepared in three different ways: (1) by incubating calf thymus DNA with rat liver micromomes, necessary cofactors and benzo(a)pyrene or derivatives of benzo(a)pyrene, (2) by isolating DNA. 5. 5. Characterization of toxicological effects of a novel in vivo benzo[a]pyrene metabolite in colonic cells

    Author : Mirjam Nordling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; benzo[a]pyrene; colon cancer; genotoxicity; oxidative DNA damage.;

    Abstract : Cancer of the colon and rectum is the third most common cancer form in the world. Where the majority of cases fall into the category of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC), lifestyle and diet have been found to be important risk factors associated with CRC. READ MORE
