  1. 1. Molecular studies of complications in end stage renal disease : focus on expression and variations of candidate susceptibility genes

    Author : Alicia Bergsten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a complex multifactorial disorder, where both environmental and genetic factors are contributing to the phenotype. The most common complications seen in ESRD patients are malnutrition, inflammation and atherosclerosis and the coexistence of these complications is denoted the MIA syndrome, which is associated with inexplicably high mortality. 2. 2. Population Differentiation in Solidago virgaurea along Altitudinal Gradients

    Author : Anna Bergsten; Jon Ågren; Staffan Karlsson; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population differentiation; altitudinal gradient; plant nutrient status; resorption efficiency; resorption proficiency; flowering phenology; countergradient variation; reproductive effort; flower production; cost of reproduction; Biology; Biologi; Other biology; Övrig biologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Altitudinal gradients offer attractive opportunities for studies of population differentiation in response to environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis, I examined population differentiation along altitudinal gradients by combining common-garden experiments with field studies and experiments in alpine, subalpine and boreal populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea. 3. 3. Escherichia coli Fimbriae, Bacterial Persistence and Host Response Induction in the Human Urinary Tract

    Author : Göran Bergsten; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; bacteriology; Microbiology; IL-8; IL-6; neutrophils; GFP; mucosal host response; Type 1 fimbriae; P fimbriae; adherence; virulence factors; regulation; deliberate colonisation; Escherichia coli 83972; Urinary tract infection; asymptomatic bacteriuria;

    Abstract : Urinary tract infections (UTI) are among the most common bacterial infections in humans. Symptomatic UTIs may be acute, recurrent or chronic but the most frequent form of UTI is asymptomatic bacteruria (ABU). In ABU, the mucosa remains inert, despite the presence of large bacterial numbers in urine. READ MORE

  4. 4. Streptococcal and staphylococcal tissue infections : therapeutic challenges and opportunities

    Author : Helena Bergsten; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus have been leading causes of human infections throughout history. S. pyogenes is of the top-ten pathogens responsible for most death globally, 0.5 million deaths per year. READ MORE

  5. 5. Buffer Related Dispersive Effects in Microwave GaN HEMTs

    Author : Johan Bergsten; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
