  1. 1. Sperm motility in Gasterosteiform fishes : The role of salinity and ovarian fluid

    Author : Helena Elofsson; Bertil Borg; Matthew Gage; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : In externally fertilising fishes, various factors in the surrounding environment may influence the viability of the sperm and eggs, thus determining the success of reproduction. In this thesis, the influence of salinity and ovarian fluid on sperm motility has been investigated in three Gasterosteiform fishes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Brain Aromatase in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata : Distribution, control and role in behaviour

    Author : Stefan Hallgren; Håkan Olsén; Bertil Borg; Julie Bakker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oestrogen production; behaviour; anatomy; endocrinology; bio markers; endocrine disruption; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; funktionell morfologi; Functional Zoomorphology; Biology;

    Abstract : Oestrogens are produced by aromatisation of androgens by the aromatase enzyme. In the vertebrate brain this synthesis has vital functions in nerve protection, cell proliferation and nerve development during injury respectively brain development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reproductive physiology of the female three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus

    Author : Chrysoula Roufidou; Bertil Borg; Geir Lasse Taranger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; overripening of eggs; spawning cycle; brain-pituitary-gonad BPG axis; vitellogenin; ovarian fluid; sex steroids; reproduction; three-spined stickleback; Gasterosteus aculeatus; fish; funktionell zoomorfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Abstract : Reproduction in vertebrates, including fishes, is under control of the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis. The female three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, produces egg clutches at intervals of a few days and spawns them in a nest built by male. READ MORE

  4. 4. The brain-pituitary-gonadal axis of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus

    Author : Yi Ta Shao; Bertil Borg; Sylvie Dufou; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; BPG axis; GnRH; lh-β; fsh-β; three-spined stickleback; Gasterosteus aculeatus; homeostasis; feedback; funktionell zoomorfologi; Functional Zoomorphology;

    Abstract : The seasonal reproduction of the three-spined stickleback is stimulated by long day photoperiod. As in other vertebrates, the reproductive system of stickleback is regulated by the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis which is largely controlled by feedback effects. Both negative and positive feedback effects on the BPG axis have been found in fish. READ MORE

  5. 5. Causes and consequences of spatial genetic variation in two species of scleractinian coral in East Africa : Levels of genetic differentiation and intraspecific diversity of Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea

    Author : Petra Souter; Mats Grahn; Bertil Borg; Karen Miller; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population genetics; corals; Kenya; Tanzania; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell morfologi;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is a study of the spatial genetic structure of two species of scleractinian corals, Pocillopora damicornis and Platygyra daedalea. The overall objective was to investigate the current capacity of MPAs to preserve and restore coral reefs and to contribute information to improve management decisions. READ MORE
