  1. 1. Hormone-Sensitive Lipase and Protein Kinase B; Molecular characterization in testis, adipose tissue and pancreatic beta cells

    Author : Lena Stenson; Signaltransduktionsforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; signal transduction; pancreas; beta cells; adipocyte; insulin; Akt; protein kinase B; spermatogenesis; cholesterol esterase; hormone-sensitive lipase; testis; cAMP; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi;

    Abstract : Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and protein kinase B (PKB) are enzymes that in different ways are associated with lipid metabolism. While HSL is the well-known lipolytic enzyme responsible for hydrolysis of stored triacylglycerols in adipose tissue, PKB is a recently identified serine/threonine protein kinase, ubiquitously expressed and involved in signal transduction pathways induced by insulin and growth factors. 2. 2. Pharmaceutical Protection of Beta-Cells in Diabetes : Using Tyrosine Kinase Inhibition and NOX4 Inhibitors

    Author : Andris Elksnis; Per-Ola Carlsson; Nils Welsh; Sergiu-Bogdan Catrina; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diabetes mellitus; Tyrosine kinase inhibitors; Imatinib; AMPK; Oxidative stress; NADPH-oxidase; NOX; NOX4; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a complex and heterogenous disease, with loss of beta-cell function and mass being a characteristic of not only type 1 diabetes (T1D), but also type 2 diabetes (T2D). In T1D, inappropriate inflammatory signaling is thought to participate in the autoimmune suppression and destruction of beta-cells. READ MORE

  3. 3. Frk/Shb Signalling in Pancreatic Beta-cells : Roles in Islet Function, Beta-cell Development and Survival as Implicated in Mouse Knockout Models

    Author : Björn Åkerblom; Michael Welsh; Hindrik Mulder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The adaptor protein Shb and the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Frk have been implicated in intracellular signalling in insulin-producing beta cells. In this thesis, knockout mice are used to further elucidate the role of Shb and Frk for beta cell number, cytokine-induced cell death, and glucose homeostasis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Coupling mechanisms of insulin secretion - roles of mitochondrial metabolism and cAMP

    Author : Ulrika Krus; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; secreting systems; Endocrinology; pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase; beta-cells; pyruvate carboxylase; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; diabetes;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is a disease that increases tremendously in the western world. It is characterized by insulin resistance and defects in insulin secretion. Insulin resistance is tightly linked to obesity, and usually precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Liza Grapensparr; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Mia Phillipson; Aileen King; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. READ MORE
