  1. 21. Intracellular signaling of phosphorylated insitol compounds : a study in pancreatic beta-cells and hippocampal neurons

    Author : Jia Yu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : InsP6; L-type Ca 2 channel; hippocampal neuron; Ins 1; 4; 5 P3; Ca2 ; cyt-MIPP; pancreatic beta-cell; PtdIns 3; 4; 5 P3; Ptdlns 3; 5 P2.;

    Abstract : The family of phosphorylated inositol compounds consists of soluble cytosolic inositol phosphates and insoluble inositol phospholipids, localized in cellular membranes and the nuclear matrix. Although inositol phospholipids only account for 5-10% of total plasma membrane lipids, these compounds and their inositol phosphate derivatives play an important role in a broad range of cellular processes including intracellular Ca 2+ signalling, ion channel regulation, vesicle trafficking, both exo- and endocytosis, cell growth and apoptosis. 2. 22. Pathophysiology and treatment of defective insulin secretion in diabetes

    Author : Anders Rosengren; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pancreatic beta-cells; stem cells; genetics; exocytosis; Adra2a; PACAP; GLP-1; Physiology; Fysiologi; secreting systems; Endocrinology; diabetology; Endokrinologi; insulin secretion; Diabetes mellitus; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : Defective insulin secretion is a central feature in diabetes mellitus and results from reduced pancreatic beta-cell mass as well as aberrant beta-cell function. The pathophysiology of diabetes is incompletely known, but a strong hereditary component is suggested. READ MORE

  3. 23. Membrane rafts and its GPI anchored complement inhibitors regulate insulin secretion

    Author : Vini Nagaraj; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Membrane rafts; basal insulin secretion; regulated insulin secretion; CD59; CD55; SNARE proteins; insulin; pancreatic beta cells.;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetic patients usually exhibit an abnormal lipid profile. One such lipid that is constantly elevated in T2D is cholesterol. At the cellular level, cholesterol aids in tight packing of sphingolipids in certain regions of the plasma membrane and these specialized regions are termed ‘membrane rafts’, which act as signalling hubs. 4. 24. Studies of individual pancreatic -cells : Electrophysiological analysis of rhythmic behaviour and development of new techniques

    Author : Staffan Dryselius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Diabetes; pancreatic beta-cells; insulin release; signal transduction; cytoplasmic calcium; oscillations; patch clamp; ATP-regulated potassium channels; voltage-dependent calcium channels; metabolism; calcium ion; strontium ion; manganese ion; wavelets; de-noising; pattern recognition; superfusion; solution changes; microscopic labelling; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The insulin concentration in blood varies periodically, which is believed to prevent down-regulation of the hormone receptors. Loss of the regular insulin oscillations is considered to be an early sign of developing diabetes. READ MORE

  5. 25. Functional Studies of Genes Associated with Muscle Growth in Pigs and Hair Greying in Horses

    Author : Lin Jiang; Leif Andersson; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Gerli Pielberg; Christopher Tuggle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; QTN; muscle development; IGF2; ZBED6; RNA-seq; ChIP-seq; myoblasts; pancreatic beta cells; Grey horse; melanoma; MITF; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology;

    Abstract : Domestic animals have become very different from their wild ancestors during domestication and animal breeding. This provides a good model to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation. In my thesis I have studied genes affecting two important traits, leanness in pigs and hair greying-associated melanoma in horses. READ MORE
