  1. 11. Antibiotic resistance in Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus plantarum

    Author : Maria Egervärn; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) may act as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes that can be transferred via the food chain or within the gastrointestinal tract to pathogenic bacteria. This thesis provides data required for assessing the potential risk of using antibiotic resistant strains of the LAB species Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus plantarum as food processing aids or probiotics. 2. 12. Commensal microbes, immune reactivity and childhood inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Cecilia Barkman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Inflammatory bowel disease; IBD; Pediatric; Childhood; Microbiota; T cells; B cells; cytokine; IL-12; monocytes; phagocytosis; intracellular signaling pathway; Crohn s disease; ulcerative colitis; children; flora;

    Abstract : Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic and relapsing intestinal inflammation of unknown etiology, but immune activation by the commensal microbiota probably plays a major role. The two major categories of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. READ MORE

  3. 13. Microbiota of the alimentary tract of children - implications for allergy and inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Fei Sjöberg; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Allergy, which is the most common chronic disease in Swedish children and adolescents, is associated with a high standard of living and Western lifestyle. According to the hygiene hypothesis, allergy is due to inadequate stimulation of the immune system by microbes during early childhood, leading to failed maturation of the immune system. READ MORE

  4. 14. Effects of Probiotics and Plant Components on Murine Experimental Colitis and Acute Liver Failure

    Author : Nadia Osman; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; bacteriology; virology; Rose hip; Microbiology; Probiotics; Prebiotics; Liver injury; Blueberry; Gastro-enterology; Colitis; Gastroenterologi; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : Acute liver failure is accompanied by a high rate of bacterial septic complications. High portal level of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can lead to a pronounced secretion by Kupffer cells of pro-inflammatory mediators which have been shown to be early and important mediators of liver injury. 5. 15. Influence of the microflora on gastrointestinal nitric oxide generation : studies in newborn infants and germ-free animals

    Author : Tanja Sobko; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nitrite; nitrate; IBD; lactobacilli; probiotics; germ-free; SCFA; H 2; newborn infants;

    Abstract : Interactions between intestinal bacteria and the host play an important role in physiological regulation of gut function and in development of various diseases. Nitric oxide (NO) exhibits a variety of biological actions in the gut including regulation of regional blood flow, gut motility, water and electrolyte transport and immunity. READ MORE
