  1. 6. Adhesion-related interactions of Actinomyces and Streptococcus biofilm bacteria

    Author : Mirva Drobni; Nicklas Strömberg; Karl-Eric Magnusson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biofilm; Actinomyces; Streptococcus; adhesion; Cariology; Cariologi;

    Abstract : Adhesion of bacteria is a key event in biofilm formation and is mediated by bacterial adhesins recognising host or bacterial partner receptors. In oral biofilm formation, primary Actinomyces and Streptococcus colonizers adhere to salivary pellicle proteins such as proline-rich proteins (PRPs) as well as to mucosal surfaces. READ MORE

  2. 7. Microbial biofilm communities associated with degradation of sprayed concrete in subsea tunnels

    Author : Sabina Karacic; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine environment; subsea tunnels; surface structure; biofilm; steel fibers; metagenomics.; microbially induced deterioration; amplicon sequencing; concrete;

    Abstract : Deterioration of concrete leads to reduced structural strength implying high societal challenge with huge economic impact. In the Oslofjord subsea tunnel, complex microbial biofilm activity together with abiotic attack from saline groundwater are responsible for concrete matrix degradation and steel fiber corrosion. 3. 8. Prevention of Biofilm Formation on Silicone Rubber Materials for Outdoor High Voltage Insulators

    Author : Sevil Atari Jabarzadeh; Sigbritt Karlsson; Ferruccio Doghieri; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; High voltage insulator; silicone rubber; biofouling; biofilm; biocide; superhydrophobicity; self-cleaning; hierarchical roughness;

    Abstract : Microbial colonization on the surface of silicone rubber high voltage outdoor insulators often results in the formation of highly hydrated biofilm that influence the surface properties, such as surface hydrophobicity. The loss of hydrophobicity might lead to dry band formation, and, in the worst cases, flashover and failure of the insulator. READ MORE

  4. 9. Perspectives on Biofilms for the Removal of Organic Micropollutants in Wastewater

    Author : Ellen Edefell; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wastewater treatment; wastewater; biofilm; ozonation; activated carbon; powdered activated carbon; granular activated carbon; biological degradation; Moving bed biofilm reactor;

    Abstract : The use of biofilms to improve the removal of organic micropollutants in waste¬water treatment plants (WWTPs) has been investigated. The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, the use of biofilms for the biological degradation of micro¬pollutants was investigated. READ MORE

  5. 10. Lactobacillus characterization and effects on oral biofilm composition

    Author : Nelly Romani Vestman; Ingegerd Johansson; Jukka Meurman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lactobacillus; L. gasseri; probiotic traits; oral biofilm; breastfeeding; oral microbiota; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : The human body is home for millions of bacteria. The largest microbial community is located in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract, including the oral cavity with >700 identified taxa. Lactobacillus, which is normal inhabitant of the GI tract, contributes to health by possible biofilm and immune modulation. READ MORE
