  1. 1. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis

    Author : Nisha H. Motwani; Elena Gorokhova; Jakob Walve; Catherine Legrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bloom-forming filamentous cyanobacteria; diazotrophs; picocyanobacteria; zooplankton; grazing; molecular diet analysis; stable isotopes; biochemical indices; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production. 2. 2. Multiplex markers in a plant breeding perspective

    Author : Mats Hansen; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant biochemistry; plant breeding; SNP; RAPD; molecular markers; AFLP; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Plant breeding is largely depending on the repeated selection for desirable traits. This process is both time and labour consuming, making the development of commercial plant varieties a slow and costly activity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Application of Molecular Markers in Sugar Beet Breeding

    Author : Annika Hjerdin Panagopoulos; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry; breeding; marker application; molecular markers; sugar beet;

    Abstract : Around 1750 a German chemist discovered it to be possible to extract sugar crystals from beet juice. Since then, breeding and improved agricultural practices have increased the concentration of sucrose per root from around 4% to around 18%. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mine the Gaps : Evolution of Eukaryotic Protein Indels and their Application for Testing Deep Phylogeny

    Author : Pravech Ajawatanawong; Sandra Baldauf; James McInerney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; indel; insertion deletion; protein evolution; bioinformatics; non-bilateria; eukaryotes; phylogeny; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Insertions/deletions (indels) are potentially powerful evolutionary markers, but little is known about their evolution and few tools exist to effectively study them. To address this, I developed SeqFIRE, a tool for automated identification and extraction of indels from protein multiple sequence alignments. READ MORE

  5. 5. Exploring the Genetics of SLE with Linkage and Association Analysis

    Author : Cecilia Johansson; Marta Alarcón-Riquelme; Peter Gregersen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Systemic lupus erythematosus; complex disease; linkage analysis; association analysis; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : The aim with this thesis has been to identify genes involved in the pathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). SLE is a systemic autoimmune disorder, most likely caused by both several genetic and environmental factors. READ MORE
