  1. 1. Physiology and Genetics of Acidithiobacillus species : Applications for Biomining

    Author : Olena Rzhepishevska; Mark Dopson; Wolfgang Sand; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Bacteria from the genus Acidithiobacillus are often associated with biominingand acid mine drainage. Biomining utilises acidophilic, sulphur and ironoxidising microorganisms for recovery of metals from sulphidic low grade oresand concentrates. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dekkera bruxellensis – a Competitive Yeast for Ethanol Production from Conventional and Non-conventional Substrates

    Author : Johanna Blomqvist; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In the ethanol industry and research community, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is regarded as the most competitive fermentation yeast and therefore industrial yeast populations are rarely studied. This thesis investigates yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations in a Swedish ethanol plant. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phytostabilization of mine tailings covered with fly ash and sewage sludge

    Author : Clara Neuschütz; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Anthony R. Dexter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ammonium; biosolids; cadmium; copper; energy crop; metal and nutrient leakage; nitrate; phosphate; phytoremediation; plant stress response; root exudates; zinc; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Establishing plant communities is essential for the restoration of contaminated land. As potential cover materials, fly ash and sewage sludge can prevent formation of acid mine drainage from sulfidic mine waste. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ammonium Feedback Control in Wastewater Treatment Plants

    Author : Linda Åmand; Bengt Carlsson; Peter Vanrolleghem; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aeration control; ammonium feedback control; biological nitrogen removal; full-scale experiments; gain scheduling control; PI control; process control; repetitive control; wastewater treatment; Elektroteknik med inriktning mot reglerteknik; Electrical Engineering with specialization in Automatic Control;

    Abstract : The aeration process is often the single largest consumer of electricity in a wastewater treatment plant. Aeration in biological reactors provides microorganisms with oxygen which is required to convert ammonium to nitrate. Ammonium is toxic for aqueous ecosystems and contributes to eutrophication. 5. 5. Vitreoscilla Haemoglobin. Genetic Fusions and Metabolic Characterisation

    Author : Viktoria Roos; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism; osmotic stress; transcript profiling; DNA microarrays; random elongation mutagenesis; directed evolution; mRNA structure; Vitreoscilla haemoglobin VHb ; Escherichia coli; salt stress.;

    Abstract : Vitreoscilla is an obligate aerobic bacterium living in oxygen-poor environments such as stagnant ponds and decaying vegetable matter. Vitreoscilla expresses a homodimeric haemoglobin (VHb) when subjected to oxygen-limited conditions. READ MORE
