1. Nitrogen removal in treatment wetlands : Factors influencing spatial and temporal variations
Abstract : Decreasing the nitrogen transport from land to surrounding seas is a major task throughout the world to limit eutrophication of the coastal areas. Several approaches are currently used, including the establishment of wetlands, to decrease the transport of nitrogen. READ MORE

2. Wastewater treatment and biomass generation by Nordic microalgae : growth in subarctic climate and microbial interactions
Abstract : Nordic native microalgal strains were isolated, genetically classified and tested for their ability to grow in municipal wastewater. Eight of the isolated strains could efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphate in less than two weeks. Two of these strains, Coelastrella sp. READ MORE

3. Nitrogen Removal in Created Wetlands : Considerations – Challenges – Possibilities
Abstract : Created wetlands in agricultural landscapes deliver a multitude of ecosystem services, one of which is the removal of nitrogen (N) from water to reduce eutrophication. Wetland N removal, primarily through denitrification, is influenced by various factors. READ MORE

4. Treatment of domestic wastewater using microbiological processes and hydroponics in Sweden
Abstract : Conventional end-of-pipe solutions for wastewater treatment have been criticized from a sustainable view-point, in particular regarding recycling of nutrients. The integration of hydroponic cultivation into a wastewater treatment system has been proposed as an ecological alternative, where nutrients can be removed from the wastewater through plant uptake; however, cultivation of plants in a temperate climate, such as Sweden, implies that additional energy is needed during the colder and darker period. 5. Population Differentiation in Solidago virgaurea along Altitudinal Gradients
Abstract : Altitudinal gradients offer attractive opportunities for studies of population differentiation in response to environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis, I examined population differentiation along altitudinal gradients by combining common-garden experiments with field studies and experiments in alpine, subalpine and boreal populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea.
