  1. 6. European Black Grouse : MHC Genetic Diversity and Population Structure

    Author : Tanja Strand; Jacob Höglund; Helena Westerdahl; David S. Richardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Major Histocompatibility Complex; BLB; balancing selection; concerted evolution; bottleneck; fragmentation; 3 UTR; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Black grouse Tetrao tetrix is a bird species composed of large, continuous as well as severely reduced and fragmented populations, making it an optimal species to investigate how genetic diversity is affected by habitat fragmentation. I have focused on genetic diversity in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) to measure the ability of the black grouse to respond to environmental changes. READ MORE

  2. 7. Sex, Sperm and Speciation : On sexual selection and fertility in hybridizing flycatchers

    Author : Murielle Ålund née Podevin; Anna Qvarnström; Simone Immler; Leonie Moyle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sperm biology; sexual selection; speciation; hybridization; cryptic female choice; fertility; Ficedula flycatchers; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Sexual reproduction entails complex co-evolution between the sexes, necessary for successful fertilization, ensuring individual and population-level fitness. Interfertility is the main criterion for species definition and understanding speciation requires detailed studies of reproductive barriers. READ MORE

  3. 8. Cooperative Breeding in the Southern Anteater-Chat : Sexual Disparity, Survival and Dispersal

    Author : Jonathan Barnaby; Jan Ekman; Anssi Laurila; Rita Covas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Southern anteater-chat; Myrmecocichla formicivora; cooperative breeding; social evolution; behavioural ecology; delayed dispersal; family living; Africa; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Group-living sets the scene for complex social behaviours such as cooperative breeding, and exploring the factors that shape group-living is crucial in understanding these behaviours. This thesis explores the ecology of a population of the facultative cooperative breeding southern anteater-chat (Myrmecocichla formicivora), a group-living bird species endemic to southern Africa. 4. 9. Genetic Adaptation and Speciation in Darwin’s Finches and Atlantic Herring

    Author : Fan Han; Leif Andersson; Kjetill Sigurd Jakobsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Darwin s finches; Atlantic herring; Population genetics; Evolution; Ecological adaptation; Speciation; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Natural selection acts on existing genetic variation to drive genetic adaptation of organisms to various ecological niches. Interaction between closely related populations, through processes such as competition and hybridization, may either lead to their divergence or population fusion, which has consequences for adaptation and the formation of species. 5. 10. Past demography and local adaptation in forest trees : Insights from natural populations and breeding programs of Norway spruce

    Author : Lili Li; Martin Lascoux; Brunno Fady; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; clines; demographic history; local adaptation; Picea abies; Picea obovata; population genetic structure; Swedish breeding program; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Spatial changes in natural selection patterns can give rise to local adaptation and genetic differentiation between populations. Local adaptation for phenological traits is pronounced in many forest tree species. READ MORE
