  1. 21. Interaction between biomaterials and innate immunity with clinical implications

    Author : Shan Huang; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Charlotte Dahle; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement system; contact system; blood; biomaterials; biocompatibility; in vitro screening; iC3; dialysis;

    Abstract : Today there is an increasing clinical demand and expectation of patients for biomaterials, which underscores the importance of discovering the correlations between biomaterials and biological systems, especially blood. When an artificial material makes contact with blood, the first event is a rapid adsorption of plasma protein on the material surface, on top of which the innate immune system is triggered, with potentially detrimental consequences. 2. 22. Insights into Covalent Chemistry for the Development of Biomaterials

    Author : Daniel Bermejo-Velasco; Oommen P. Varghese; Jöns Hilborn; Frey Holger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hyaluronic acid; hydrogel; biomaterials; covalent chemistry; biomedical applications; MRI; Kemi med inriktning mot materialkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Materials Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot polymerkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Polymer Chemistry;

    Abstract : Covalent cross-linking chemistry is currently exploited in the preparation of biomaterial for biomedical applications. Choice of these chemistries for the preparation of biomaterials and bioconjugates strongly influences the biological output of these materials. READ MORE

  3. 23. Bone tissue regeneration indento-alveolar surgery : clinical and experimental studies on biomaterials and bone graft substitutes

    Author : Annika Sahlin-Platt; Maria Ransjö; Christer Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomaterials; bone graft substitutes; compomer; root end filling; Bio-Oss; Bioactive glass 45S5; Algipore; SEM EDAX; ICP-OES; Cryo-XPS;

    Abstract : Pathological processes in the alveolar and facial bones can lead to bone loss that may not heal with complete regeneration. Biomaterials can be used to facilitate the healing process and/or as a bone substitute, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. READ MORE

  4. 24. Antibacterial surface coatings for biomedical applications

    Author : Saba Atefyekta; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Antimicrobial surfaces; mesoporous titania; elastin-like polypeptide; antimicrobial peptide; antibiotic delivery;

    Abstract : Over the past decades there has been a significant increase in the diversity and function of biomaterials. Today, medical practices utilize a large number of biomaterials in the form of medical devices and implants. However, one major obstacle that limits the efficiency of biomaterials is their susceptibility to develop infection. READ MORE

    Abstract : Bone is a remarkable multifunctional tissue with the ability to regenerate and remodel without generating any scar tissue. However, bone loss due to injury or diseases can be a great challenge and affect the patient significantly. Autologous bone grafting is commonly used throughout the world. READ MORE
