    Abstract : 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and derivatives thereof are widely usedprodrugs in treatment of pre-malignant skin diseases of the cancer treatmentmethod photodynamic therapy (PDT). The target molecule in 5-ALAPDTis protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), which is synthesized endogenously from5-ALA via the heme pathway in the cell. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biological membrane interfaces involved in diseases : a biophysical study

    Author : Fredrick Lindström; Gerhard Gröbner; Dick Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solid-state NMR; DSC; Amyloid-beta peptide; Nociceptin; DMPC; DMPG; DDAB; peptide-lipid interaction; branched-chain fatty acid.; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Interactions between peptides and biological lipid membranes play a crucial role in many cellular processes such as in the mechanism behind Alzheimer’s disease where amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta)is thought to be a key component. The initial step of binding between a surface active peptide and its target membrane or membrane receptor can involve a non specific electrostatic association where positively charged amino acid residues and a negatively charged membrane surface interact. 3. 3. On the quantitative analysis of electronic energy transfer/migration in proteins studied by fluorescence spectroscopy

    Author : Mikael Isaksson; Lennart Johansson; Bo Albinsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biophysical Chemistry; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Two recently developed theories of electronic energy transfer/migration were for the first time applied to real protein systems for extracting molecular distances. The partial donor-donor energy migration (PDDEM) is an extension to the previously developed donor-donor energy migration (DDEM, F Bergström et al PNAS 96, 1999, 12477) which allows using chemically identical but photophysically different fluorophores in energy migration experiments. 4. 4. Computational studies of photodynamic drugs, phototoxic reactions and drug design

    Author : Klefah Abrahem Klefah Musa; Leif Eriksson; Nino Russo; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NSAIDs; fluoroquinolone; photodegradation; phototoxicity; drug design; DFT; TD-DFT; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The most important criterion when designing new drugs or improving old ones in order to prevent side effects or at least diminish them is drug safety. Treatment of all diseases generally needs use of either topical application or systemic medications (transported in the blood) during a certain period of time. READ MORE
