6. Aspects of Antisense and Antigene Chemistry of Oligonucleotides Tethered to Intercalators
Abstract : Synthetic and physicochemical studies on appropriately functionalized ODN-conjugates have been performed to evaluate their abilities to act as antisense agents against RNA or as intramolecular DNA cross-linking agents. Intercalating aromatic systems [phenazine (Pnz), dipyridophenazine (DPPZ)] and metallointercalators such as Ru2+(phen)2(DPPZ) and Ru2+(tpy)(DPPZ)L [where L = chemically or photochemically labile ligand, phen = phenanthroline, tpy = terpyridine], which are covalently tethered to the oligo-deoxynucleotides (ODNs), have been chosen for this purpose. 7. Synthesis and investigation of bacterial effector molecules
Abstract : During infections, bacterial microorganisms initiate profound interactions with mammalian host cells. Usually defense mechanisms of the host destroy intruding bacteria in rapid manner. However, many bacterial pathogens have evolved in a way to avoid these mechanisms. READ MORE

8. Stereoelectronic effects in nucleosides and nucleotides
Abstract : This thesis is based on 12 original publications from 1994-98. Intramolecular stereoelectronicforces (anomeric and gauche effects), beside intermolecular forces such as hydrogen bonding, base stacking, electrostatics and hydration, have been found to be responsible for the localstructural changes of DNA and RNA and their components. 9. Development of 2-Pyridone-based central fragments : Affecting the aggregation of amyloid proteins
Abstract : There are many applications of small organic compounds, e.g. as drugs or as tools to study biological systems. Once a compound with interesting biological activity has been found, medicinal chemists typically synthesize small libraries of compounds with systematic differences to the initial “hit” compound.
