  1. 6. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna

    Author : Nils Ekeroth; Sven Blomqvist; Per OJ Hall; Bjørn Sundby; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment biogeochemistry; Bioturbation; Benthic nutrient fluxes; Bottom water oxygenation; Box corer; Sediment sampling; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I). 2. 7. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Author : Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. READ MORE

  3. 8. Benthic metabolism and sediment nitrogen cycling in Baltic sea coastal areas : the role of eutrophication, hypoxia and bioturbation

    Author : Stefano Bonaglia; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eutrophication; Sediment; Benthic Flux; Nitrogen Cycle; Denitrification; Baltic Sea; Biogeochemistry; biogeokemi; marin- och brackvattensekologi; Marine and Brackish Water Ecology; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Eutrophication is one of the greatest threats for the Baltic Sea, and one of its more critical consequences is bottom water hypoxia. Nutrient enrichment and oxygen-depletion affect both the deep central basins and a number of coastal areas, even though strategies for nutrient reduction have lately been implemented. READ MORE

  4. 9. Fate of contaminants in Baltic Sea sediment ecosystems : the role of bioturbation

    Author : Jenny E Hedman; Jonas Gunnarsson; Nils Kautsky; Valery Forbes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Aquatic sediments are of major importance for the cycling of environmental pollutants, acting as both sinks and secondary sources of contaminants to the ecosystem. Sediment-living organisms can affect the fate and transport of contaminants through activities like feeding and burrowing, collectively called bioturbation. READ MORE

  5. 10. Ecosystem Functions in Benthos: Importance of Macrofaunal Bioturbation and Biodiversity for Mineralization and Nutrient Fluxes

    Author : Karl Norling; Göteborgs universitet; []
