1. Multimodal Imaging of Anisotropic Hierarchical Materials
Abstract : The thesis is focused on studying the nanostructure of natural and synthetic hierarchical materials with biological applications, using X-ray scattering imaging and birefringence microscopy. The term "hierarchical materials" is used for structures composed of sub-units organised in different length scales that create the building blocks for the next level. READ MORE

2. Fibre-Optic Displacement and Temperature Sensing Using Coupling Based Intensity Modulation and Polarisation Modulation Techniques
Abstract : Optical fibre sensors are employed in the measurements of a number of different physical properties or for event detection in safety and security systems. In those environments which suffer from electromagnetic disturbance, in harsh environments where electronics cannot survive and in applications in favour of distributed detection, fibre-optic sensors have found natural areas of use. 4. Pair production, vacuum birefringence and radiation reaction in strong field QED
Abstract : In this thesis we consider three QED phenomena in strong electromagnetic fields: Schwinger pair production, vacuum birefringence and radiation reaction. We study electron-positron pair production in a variety of field configurations and, using complex worldline instantons, reveal new insights into the case of fields with lightlike inhomogeneities. 5. Derivation and application of response functions for nonlinear absorption and dichroisms
Abstract : This thesis is titled ’Derivation and application of response functions for nonlinear absorption and dichroisms’ and was written by Tobias Fahleson at the Division of Theoretical Chemistry & Biology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. It explores and expands upon theoretical means of quantifying a number of nonlinear spectroscopies, including two-photon absorption, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, Jones birefringence, and magnetic circular dichroism.
