  1. 6. Promotion of sustainable renovation in the built environment : An early stage techno-economic approach

    Author : Navid Gohardani; Folke Björk; Bo-Göran Hellers; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Refurbishment; retrofitting; renovation; energy consumption; Vacuum Insulation Panels; ACES;

    Abstract : According to the Swedish Government's set targets for energy use and environmental quality imposed by the European Union, the total energy per heated unit area in residential and commercial buildings will have to be decreased by 20% in 2020 and 50% by 2050 in relation to the annual consumption of 1995. The building sector should additionally be completely independent of fossil fuels for energy usage, with the increasing sector of renewable energy continuously growing until 2020. READ MORE

    Abstract : Today’s buildings are responsible for 40% of the world’s energy use and also a substantial share of the Global Warming Potential (GWP). In Sweden, about 21% of the energy use can be related to the heat losses through the climatic envelope. READ MORE

  3. 8. Evaluation of Innovative Rehabilitation Technologies Utilising Polymer Composites for Aging Sewer Systems

    Author : Parastou Kharazmi; Folke Björk; Tord af Klintberg; Tor Broström; KTH; []

    Abstract : Water and wastewater sewer system maintenance is among the costliest aspects of infrastructure investment. The replacement of deteriorated lines is a difficult and expensive process that causes community disturbance and is generally not conducted fast enough to meet demand. READ MORE

  4. 9. A Rational Exergy Management Model to Curb CO2 Emissions in the Exergy-Aware Built Environments of the Future

    Author : Siir Kilkis; Folke Björk; Bahram Moshfegh; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Exergy; CO2 emissions; built environment; buildings; energy system; scenario-based analysis; mitigation strategies; net-zero; LEED; energy transition; transition management; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : This thesis puts forth the means of a strategic approach to address a persistent problem in the energy system and in this way, to transition the built environment to a future state that is more exergy-aware to curb CO2 emissions. Such a vision is made possible by the six-fold contributions of the research work: I) An analytical model is developed, which for the first time, formulates the CO2 emissions that are compounded in the energy system as a function of the systematic failures to match the supply and demand of exergy. 5. 10. Developments in Ground Heat Storage Modeling

    Author : Alberto Lazzarotto; Björk Folke; Michel Bernier; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Borehole fields; g-functions; network; inclined; integrated design; Energy Technology; Energiteknik; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Ground heat storage systems can play an important role for the reduction of green house gases emissions by increasing the exploitation of renewable energy sources and “waste heat” with a consequent diminution of the use of fossil fuels.A ground heat storage consists in an array of vertical boreholes placed in such a way that promotes the mutual thermal interaction between the ground heat exchangers creating the necessary conditions required to effectively store and retrieve heat.
